In this picture there is a young man who is dressed in his whole uniform that will become his clothes for the next couple of weeks, months, or maybe even years. Behind him the place that would become his home for weeks or maybe even years, smirking after just getting into the war, clothes all nice and clean, full of energy, ready to go into the war and whatever else may be thrown at him. In good spirits willing to fight in the war and fight for the country he is willing to do anything for. What may seem like a cold dirty barracks may mean a place of warmth and comfort to him.
I agree that this man looks brave and full of energy ready to attack the next obstacle.
