Montag's boss comes to visit his "sick" employee.

He answers lots of Montag's questions about being a firefighter here, and I imagine lots of your questions for why the world is the way it is...

THEME

I think the theme of the story is that you should think before you act. Now Montag is figuring out what he is doing for a living. He is questioning if burning the books is right. "I've tried to imagine", said Montag, "Just how it would feel, I mean, to have fireman burn our houses and our books." After he comes home from work he is never in a good mood and Mildred isn't either. I feel if he never had this job he would an overall happier person.

Working theme

I believe that the working theme in the story Fahrenheit 451 is that every action has a consequence. The sequence of events that have taken place in the book have all resulted in the consequence that left Montag to decide if leaving his job is the right thing to do, and even more importantly what he wants to do. When he made the choice to leave the old lady with the books which resulted in her suicide it scared Montag. It scared him so bad that he has now reconsidered if what he does for a living is something he would like to continue with. Also the death of Clarrise I believe also had an effect in him reconsidering his profession. I think this because Clarrise made an impact on Montag even at such a young age. She was able to talk to him and get him thinking like no one had done before. When Clarrise died I believe that he had thought more and more about the aspects of life that she had taught him while she was still living. 

           From reading through Montag's actions I have learned that I will take peoples advice more seriously and to actually listen and think about what a person is saying to me. I have also learned to always go with my gut feeling and never let someone change my mind about something. Something I found interesting so far is that Clarrisse explained to Montag she was afraid of people because of what could happen to her and within the next couple of days she had died in what he thought to be a car accident. As you can see Fahrenheit 451 has a working theme and I have been able to connect with the book in a varies of ways.

3. Why does Mildred act so uncomassionate towards Montag? Why does the old lady commit suicicde over books? Does Montag only show compassion towards the old lady because of what Clarrise taught him? 

1. I think the theme of this section of reading is to never take a single moment for granted because it can be gone within the matter of seconds. Clarrise dying showed Montag that he won't be able to get the money he had with her back and although she was younger than him she taught him a lot about different aspect of life, also when the old lady died it took the fire department to a different place and also Montag realized that the old lady won't be able to get her life back and took her own life due to the fire department and what they do.

The first pages of assigned reading are always the most challenging as we "get used to" an author's writing style and work to figure out what the author's purpose in writing truly is.

You were assigned pages 7-22, some of you up to page 30. We have started to look at point of view, characters, sentence patterns and the diction of nouns, pronouns and adjectives.

The Thrill of the Grass Challenge of Change and Price of Progress Themes

1.      The theme of the story, “The Thrill of the Grass,” is if you want something to change, and it isn't changing on its own, change it yourself.

2.      In the story, the narrator says, “Over the next few days an idea forms within me, ripening, swelling, pushing everything else into a corner.” He also says, “I could show you what I dream, paint you pictures, suggest what might happen….” Another quote is, “I hold up the square of artificial turf like something freshly killed, while all the time digging the sharp point into the packaged earth I have exposed. I replace the sod lovingly, covering the newly bared surface.”

3.      The first two quotes tell you that the narrator has an idea of something he wants the turf on the baseball field to be changed to sod and it is not changing. The third quote tells you that he changed the turf to sod on his own.

4.      The theme is still worthy of our consideration in 2013 for everyone who wants to make a change because if you want something to change you might have to learn to change it yourself or else nothing will change.

One of the features I like about the blog is that you can edit your comments and posts because if you mess up, or need to add something, to your response you can. I also like the setup of the blog because it is simple and easy to use.

Unbroken Response

So far I like the book “Unbroken” because I like that it is based on a true story. I also like that I can learn multiple life lessons from this book, such as how to survive in certain situations, and to never give up. Something that I don’t like about reading this book is the length because I feel that it is too long. So far I do not have any questions about the book, and do not know anyone who has read the book yet.

"There Will Come Soft Rains" Theme

1) The theme of Ray Bradbury's There Will Come Soft Rains is that with technology and as it advances, we don't always use it for the right reasons and end up sometimes hurting other living things with it, but will still outlast us all.

2) Page 88 "The house stood alone in a city of rubble and ashes. This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles."

Page 92 "The fire burst the house and let it slam flat down... Among the ruins, one wall stood alone. Within the wall, a last voice said... 'Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026, today is...'"

3) The first and second connects with the theme because they shows how the technology house outlasted everything, from fires to something that could destroy a whole town. The first also hints at technology hurting others because it said that the ruins of the city had a "radioactive glow", which could mean that the city could have been destroyed by a nuclear bomb, which is a wrong reason to use it.

4) This theme is for everyone, as well as the evidence for it, and is still worthy of our consideration today in 2013. As technology gets more advanced and complex, we start using it for the wrong reasons, and we are all guilty of it. For example, we have these smartphones, but when we use them for things unimportant, like videogames or goofy pictures, those are wrong reasons for using technology, and we all know it but we don't care because we are being entertained. The right reasons for using them are for more important things like phone calls (not all of them), homework, and things like that. Advancements in warfare technology with new weapons also proves why the theme is still worth our consideration because we are inventing new ways of hurting each other. What will happen when those advancements go to far, and how much people are going to get hurt? We are also having advancements in technology be virtually indestructible, increasing the chance of them lasting longer. We need to consider this theme as technology advances, as it will make us also think of some consequences of the advancements too, and stories with these kind of themes might help people to start to realize it.

"The Veldt" theme

The theme of the story "The Veldt" is sometimes just because you can make some technology doesn’t mean you should due to ethical reasons. In the story one quote that supports this theme is "His wife paused in the middle of the kitchen and watched the stove busy humming to itself making supper for four." Another quote that backs up my theme is "But I thought that's why we bought this house, so we wouldn't have to do anything?". These quotes support my theme because even though they could make a stove which can hum, and cook by itself. However, this is unethical because it makes the kids feel like their parents do nothing for them. This theme is especially relevant today because new technology is constantly coming up, but we must ask is it ethical. For example stem cells are a new form of technology that has not yet been fully put into play because some people feel it is unethical.

3 It talks about how they bought the house so they wouldn’t have to do anything, and let the technology do it for them.

There Will Come Soft Rains

The theme of "There Will Come Soft Rains" is that technology can hurt you. I say this because in the book by Ray Bradbury the house does everything for the family. They soon realize that their dependent on it. The first quote I noticed was “His wife paused in the middle of the kitchen and watched the stove busy humming to itself, making supper for four”. Also another quote was “They walked down the hall of their soundproofed Happylife Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars installed, this house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them.” The last quote I found was "The fire burst the house and let it slam flat down, puffing out skirts of spark and smoke". This theme is still relevant in 2013 because people want to have the latest technology and be ahead of society.

          The two versions of Ray Bradbury's The Sound of Thunder, story and movie, are very similar in detail.  Although the two were almost the same, they both had their differences.  One difference between the two is that Eckels seemed to be more fearful of Travis in the movie than the story originally portrayed.  During the teams time travel, the book described the oxygen masks that they traveled with, while the movie did not show them wearing masks.  The story also did not clearly describe the time machine in the same detail that the movie showed.  Ultimately, the overall detail of the movie was much more clear than Ray Bradbury wrote about in his book.
          Aside from a few small details, the two versions of The Sound of Thunder are virtually the same.  The theme that was consistent between the two versions was the danger of time travel.  In both, Eckels departs from the path and kills a butterfly.  Along with the killing of the butterfly, a dinosaur that the team encountered was shot and killed at the end of both versions when the team traveled through time.
          Personally, I enjoyed the movie version of Ray Bradbury's story because I found it more helpful to understand with he overall detail shown.  I had a more difficult time trying to picture what was happening when reading the story version of The Sound of Thunder.
 

The Veldt

The theme of The Veldt by Ray Bradbury is to not become to attached to technology. In the story technology takes over the kids lives. In the story David Maclean said "You've let this room and this house replace you and your wife in your childrens affections". This is how bad it got. It was so bad David Maclean recommended tearing the whole nursery down. He said "this is very bad my advice for you is to have the whole damn room torn down". This evidence  proves how much technology had taken over the kids lives. This theme could still relate to the people of today. With all the technology we have like phone, computers, and gaming systems it can take over kids lives. This is why you can't get to attached to your technology.

I think the theme of The sound of thunder is do what you are told and listen to your superiors. The thing is that when he went in to the safari he was wicked confident to a point of a fault. He was told one thing stay on the path and since he went off the path, the future was changed.I think this story can relate to kids and then doing what there parents tell them and if they don't do it something bad will happen so yes i think it is still important in 2013.

There Will Come Soft Rains

The theme of There Will Come Soft Rains in my opinion is that technology doesn't always work in your favor. I think this is the theme because through out the story the house does everything for the people that live there. For example the house makes breakfast, and even reads the mothers favorite poem to her at night before she goes to bed. At the end of the story a tree branch falls on the house causing a fire and it is unable to be put out. Which is why i think technology doesn't always work in your favor and i think that this would be the theme of the story. "The house tried to save itself" by the house trying to save itself it actually did more harm than not because it shut all the doors in the house which locked the mother in the house which was her cause of death. "It had sent flame outside the house, up through the attic to the pumps up there" That had caused the pumps to shatter which lead to complications as well. "The fire burst the house and let it slam flat down, puffing out skirts of spark and smoke." The house had burned to the ground and had killed the mother as well which is why i think technology doesn't always work in your favor is the theme. I do think that this theme is one you could consider in 2013 because technology gets more complex everyday. Its our job as the people to use it the right way and not take advantage of all the opportunities that could later put us in danger.

The Veldt

    The theme of the story is a warning against electronics and how electronics shouldn't control out lives. In 'The Veldt' by Ray Bradbury electronics control their lives and exemplifies how severe withdrawals can be after being so attached to technology. 
     "You mean you want to fry my eggs for me?"

     "Yes." She nodded.
     "And dam my socks?"
     "Yes." A frantic, watery-eyed nodding.
     "And sweep the house?"
     "Yes, yes - oh, yes!''
     "But I thought that's why  we bought this house, so we wouldn't have to
do anything?"

      Even the simplest of chores to do around the house has been provided and done for by the house. The theme is a warning because technology can take over our lives so much    that we can neglect and take advantage of it. In 2013 we are at a day where technology is used constantly every day, so we need to be aware of knowing when enough is enough     and not let it get to the point where we get attacked by it.

These quotes help me prove my theme. Everything this family does and uses is powered by high technology. They don't cook their own food, dress themselves, and they even have help going to sleep. The wife finally realized that without doing traditional housewife things , she had too much time on her hands.

This theme kind of makes me feel like i should take a step back and examen how much of my life is controlled by technology and how often i use technology.

The Sound of Thunder Compare and Contrast

The DVD, “The Sound of Thunder,” had some similarities, but also some differences to the book. In both, the DVD and the book, you could tell that the safari leader, Travis, did not like Eckels, the main character, from the first time they met. Travis was very curious and strict about the rules of time travel, while Eckels did not find these rules to be that important and was reasoning with Travis. You could also tell how scared Eckels was of the dinosaur, in the DVD and the book. In the DVD, Eckels gave a scared expression, while in the book the details helped me to picture how scared he was. Another similarity is the setting of the story. While there were similarities between the DVD and the book, there were also differences. By watching the DVD, I noticed that some of the dialogue was different from the book. I could also see how the other hunters acted by watching the DVD, while in the book there was not enough details for me to determine how they would be acting. Another difference was that the butterfly was orange in the DVD, but it was green in the book.

Compare and Contrast

"A Sound of Thunder" was a science fiction short story, about the danger of time travel.  In class we got to watch the movie as well.  One major difference between the movie and story was the movie used props for the technology.  I feel this helped the audience by giving them a good visual aid, for the technology that has not been invented yet. Some examples in the movie was a path that defied gravity, and the time machine.  Even though there was differences, all in all the story and DVD were extremely alike in many ways.  For example the plot line was almost the same, and the themes remained the same.  I feel the theme was a decision that happens in the past could greatly change the future.

There Will Come Soft Rains

  In, "There Will Come Soft Rains", it is about a house in the future that talks and performs tasks for the family. However the family had died in a nuclear accident. The house continues to talk even after the family is gone, stating the date and the time periodically. The theme of the story about technology has the potential to severely hurt us. Other countries could want our technology and be willing to do anything for it.It is also stating that the technology is durable, strong, and can resist anything we do to it.

The sound of thunder was a book/movie we read and saw in class. I think the book told the story better the movie, because the movie wasn't that well explained. they moved it at to fast of a pace, while the story told it at a slow pace. the book also explained the scenes better than, the movie, the story gave me a better picture than the movie did.

Sound of Thunder Theme

The "Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury is a futuristic tale the deals with the consequences to time travel. In the story Eckels decides to step of the path in the past and accidentally steps on a Butterfly. That mistake completely altered the future. That's why the theme of the story is that small decisions can have big consequences. When they all came back to the past the spelling of the sign was changed to "TYME SEFARI INC." And when Travis asks who won the election, the official says "Deutscher, of course! Who else? Not that fool weakling Keith" That death of that butterfly alone changed the spelling and the outcome of the election, proving that such a small action could have big consequences. This theme can apply today in 2013 because if you lie about simple thing today it could build up to something you never wanted. Next remember to think before you act.  

Compare and Contrast: "The Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury

Many, in fact the majority, of both the story and video versions of Ray Bradbury's The Sound of Thunder are the same, but there are a couple differences between them. The story lines, for example, are similar, if not the same. By story lines I mean the general, overall summary details. These one's would be: Eckels goes to the Time Safari, travels back in time with his guide Travis, the same "This-Has-Not-Happened-Yet" and precautions and dangers speeches are given, Eckels gets scared and goes off the path when about to kill the T-Rex, they travel back to the future, find it to be changed because Eckels killed a butterfly, and Travis shoots him (or something). Also, the facts that the signs were both changed from the beginning to the end, the floating path, Travis not liking Eckels, and Keith being President at the beginning and then at the end, the. President being Deutscher, are all the same too. Some differences between them though, are in details and events, are that we hear about the election and the winner on a T.V., that there is an added scene where we see, with Travis, the animals hunted by Eckels, and on the safari, there only being 4 people on it instead of 5 (including Eckels and Travis). In addition, on it, the safari, nobody is wearing those mask-helmets mentioned in the story, and the 2 others on it aren't introduced. Also, some people say the lines others say in the book, and some didn't say anything at all. Finally, in the video, Travis asks all the questions and finds the butterfly on Eckels' boot, instead of Eckels. In conclusion, the majority of both of them, like the story lines, were similar or the same, but there are differences in the video from the story, especially in the ending. 

The theme of this story is that every little thing we do and every living thing can affect everyone's futures. 

I believe that the story more powerfully supports the theme because it has more details than the video to the differences between the 2, and the dangers of what can happen that can change the future.

It easy to get wrapped up into technology today. Now a days kids have cellphones and are always on the computer. "The Veldt" is giving us a warning about the effects of technology in our lives. 

comparison and contradiction to The Sound Of Thunder

•   The Sound Of Thunder by Ray Bradbury differs from the movie, not by much, but in the details we figure out the differences. In the book Bradbury mentions that when they travel they wear oxygen masks, while in the movie they go without. The oxygen masks are important in the story because they filter bacteria so there is virtually no trace of them ever being there. The level of detail in the book where they take all measurable precautions isn't as thorough in the movie, where the only precaution they take is to stay on the path.
• The theme Bradbury is trying to portray is a warning against time travel. 
• The story is a better representation of the theme Bradbury is portraying because of all the precautions.The precautions make it seem like a more tedious procedure than it should be. Eventually if the procedure of safety is long enough people will take a hint that they shouldn't be going through time.

Sound of Thunder Compare and Contrast

Ray Bradbury wrote the story the Sound of Thunder and later came out with a movie that was based on his story. The book and movie are comparable in many ways but also differ at the same time. One way they are comparable is the fact that both selections Eckels steps off the path and kills a butterfly. Also both selections the team that went through the time travel had shot and killed a dinosaur. When they come back from the expedition they realize that a new president had been elected. Lastly, in both selections Travis kills Eckels. Although the story and the movie are comparable in a lot of ways they also differ in some ways as well. One way they differ is in the movie Eckels shows more fear towards Travis than he does throughout the story. Also in the movie the time machine is a hover craft that sits six inches above the ground, and in the story the time machine is not clearly explained. As you can see the story and the book of Sound of Thunder are comparable and also can differ at the same time.

The "Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury is about a rich businessmen that goes back in time to a safari to hunt dinosaurs. In both of the versions the setting is a safari. Also Travis is still the leader of  the hunt. The book and the movies have the same idea. One of the differences is that in that in the movies they shoot the same dinosaur many times, but in the book they shoot the Tyrannosaurus Rex once. Also in the book the changes that result from stepping off the path takes time to occur.In the movie the results happen when they return.

I try to dress up the blog posts with images.

 The first kind of blog post for our class is one I title: Response.

Whenever we read a text in class, listen to a podcast, view a video of film, I will ask you to respond to a post like this with your thoughts and feelings about the experience.

Unbroken is the first AHS Whole School Read, a book everyone is reading over the course of this year, students and teachers alike. In fact, it is the book I am bring to read as I fly back and forth to Chicago next week.

In your comments, respond to your reading of this "Extraordinary true story of Courage and Survival," by answering any or all of the bulleted questions:
