Looking at the soldier it is clear to see that he is avoiding fire. He has a serious look on his face, but does not seem to express his fear, rather it looks like he is actually angry. He carries very little do to the situation of crawling through mud. So all he appears to be carrying is his gun and what appears to be a shovel on his back. So he is carrying more emotion with him than physical objects, and seems to be determined to survive and fight.
