While looking at the soldier in the picture, I can see confindence and fear in his eyes. He is confident that his country will win the war, yet he fears death. He is scared of what is to come but is willing to stand on the front line. Something of value to this soldier is a locket that his girlfriend, fiancé, or wife gave to him before departing for the war. Inside the locket is a picture of his lover and saying to go along with it. Someone who is worth fighting for.
I like how this soldier looks scared but looks to one of his possessions to give himself mental strength.
