Compare and contrast

After you have written your Open Response practice, please take a minute to go to the student work for the 2010 ELA MCAS and look at the rubric and the anchor papers.

How would you score yourself? Why?
How is your answer similar to a 4?
how is your answer different from a 4?

What are you going to do when you are studying this evening?

  1. After reading at other people's answers and what they were scored, I'd give myself a 3. Like a 4, I explained my view and used good quotes. Even though I did that, I could have used more detail and better word choice. Tonight, when I am studying, I am going to focus on giving my open responses better detail and I will think of some better words to use. The people who had a four looked past the main point of the story and put deeper thought into it, which I need to work on as well. Once I get better at those things, I will be able to easily get a four.

  2. I would give myself a 3 because I didn't go into as much detail as the people who got fours and I didn't use as many quotes. I did, however, have the same basic idea as the people who got 4s, and I needed to organize my thoughts better.

  3. I would give myself a 3 on the response I wrote. It was like a 4 in the use of quotes but unlike a 4 in developing my ideas. Also I believe I should be more descriptive in my writing. Tonight I am looking over the stories just to know them better for tomorrow.

  4. I scored myself with a 3, because my answer was more similar to their example of a 3. I went into as much depth as I thought I could, but then when I read the fours, I read so things I never would have thought of on my own, so they will hopefully be helpful on the next open response I do. I think I might also look at other open response questions from that test and see how the fours are written.

  5. I would give my writing a 3 because I could definitely organize my thoughts better. I answered the question and supported it with details and quotes. My writing lacked organization and I could have added better vocabulary. I am going to look at all of the stories we have read and make sure I understand them completely.

  6. Like everyone else, I would also give myself a 3. I used quotes and added details but not enough. I could added a few more here and there to support my answer. Like a 4, I used quotes from the excerpt, but not enough. When I am studying this evening I am going to look over the short stories so I understand all of them.

  7. I would also give myself a three. I backed up what was being stated in my response with quotes and specific information from the story but I could have used more detail and been more clear with my wording. This evening while studying, I plan to look over the short stories so I completely understand them all. I am also going to relate them all to the price of progress and practice different writing skills.

  8. I would give my own response a 3. Like the 4s I used quotes backed my thoughts. But one of the things I could've done better wad my complete understanding of the story. After reading the sample 4s, they mentioned points that I did not see before and I realized that I could have went deeper with the meaning of the story. I am also going to focus on organzing my thoughts better in my writing.

  9. I believe I would give my response a 3 also. After reading the example responses I had many similarities to a four. I used relevant details and quotes to prove a point just as the example fours did. However, i was slightly erratic and disorganized in the flow of my response so I do not think it may not have been as clear to whoever was grading it as it was to me.

  10. I believe that mine would've been graded as a 3. Similar to a four, I had several quotes and specific information. In contrast, however, I feel that my response was not long enough, and maybe I did not structure it properly. I would give myself a 3 as a grade, overall, after reflecting and comparing it to other sample student works.

  11. Everyone guess what I scored... a three. I think that my response was a three because I used at least three quotes and use many examples from the story. I feel weird giving myself a grade but I still believe I deserved a three. Like a four, I used quotes, examples, and tried my best to really get a true feel for the story. This exercise really prepared me for the test.

  12. Going to be different from everybody else and going to give myself a 3, i thought i had a very good response to each of the question including many different quotes and using textual support in my answers. I don't think i am exactly at the 4...yet
