In your comments below, describe the kind of test that would best show me what you know and are able to do as a result of reading, discussing and writing on the blog.
Consider tests you ahve taken in the past and a test you would like to take in the future.
Think outside the box if you would like to ...
just spitballing here but maybe an oral exaam as a class or like a team project.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer to do a few open responses. Maybe give us four or five and we pick three to answer. Or maybe we could have to write an essay on our thoughts of the price of progress and what it means to us.
ReplyDeleteI like your idea, although everyone might not--can you me get more specific such as item types or specific questions or do you need more information from me, Rob?
ReplyDeleteI think it would be best to give us an open response test. I don't know how long you expect each essay to be, but I feel like three might be too many. I think two would be best that way we have enough time to do the best essay we can do for each one.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Christine for the open responses. We should get four open response questions and have to answer three out of the four. Then if we do the fourth question it should be counted as a bonus.
ReplyDeleteI think the best test would just be 3-5 open response questions about the stories and their relations to each other and their themes and etc. But I think Rob's idea would also be interesting if it worked out.
ReplyDeleteRob I was totally thinking the same thing!! I was thinking that the class would come up with questions, that you, Dr. G, would have to approve of course and then out of those you could ask us them and respond to it orally.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I liked the idea of giving us a MCAS style exam in which we would have our notes or book there and have to answer 3-5 open response questions.
Or maybe we could rewrite a segment of the story to put our own view on it.
And going totally crazy here but maybe we could even act parts out. You would grade how well we played the characters and displayed the scene.
I agree I would like to have a choice of 3 out of 5 open response questions about the price of progress and the stories themself. That way we can chose what 3 questions we think we can really show all we have learned and the ones we can best put into words.
ReplyDeleteLast year in spanish we had a test full of fill in the blank, multiple choice, and short answer questions. We also had an oral part of the exam where we would orally answer questions given by the teacher. Maybe we could do something like that in English class this year to see how well we actually understand what is being covered in class as well as for homework.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of doing something with a partner or a group, just like how we blog, that way if someone can't think of the answer the other person can jog their memory. If not maybe a choice of 2-3 open responses out of 5-6.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the groups project, but if not i wouldn't mind having to do a few open responses.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of doing 2 or 3 open responses out of a choice of 3 or 4. that way we have the option of which ones we answer but we have time to answer them thoroughly and as completely as possible. I also think we should be able to use our book and notebooks to have something the refer back to and use when we need to include examples.
ReplyDeleteI also like the idea of 2-3 open response questions out of 4-5. It will give us a chance to answer questions we feel confident about with detail and description. The questions should be about the stories and the way they are similar or different. A group project would be a good idea if we can get it to work.
ReplyDeleteI think we should be able to answer two or three open response questions about the unit, out of four given questions. Following MCAS format, I feel as though we should be able to reference or text and notes to do better work. In this way, we could be able to maybe quote part of a selection accurately, rather than paraphrasing from what we remember. I think that a test of this format would be manageable to study for and take and would show what we know about the unit.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marianna, i think it would be 5 open responce questions all about how the themes intertwine with eachother and how the themes differ slightly from story to story. But i think we should have to choose 3 and be able to use our books as in the MCAS in order to create stronger arguments using quotes directly from the text.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Michael, we should have a choice of a number of essay questions and only have to answer two. It would be preferred because sometimes kids get stressed out because they have to answer so many questions in not a lot of time. But if we only had a couple essays to write then we could take our time and do our best on both
ReplyDeleteOpen responce questions would probably be the best idea for a test. The questions should be about understanding theme and being able to compare authors styles. it should be an open book test so that we can get quotes directly from the stories for suppport. 3-5 questions would be good and we could choice the 3 we want to do and do the others for extra credit if we wanted.
ReplyDeleteFirst off I really want to know who "Sweet and Sour" is. Second, I believe we should do a partners test where one person uses the book to answer specific open response questions while the other person writes. Four or five questions would be ideal.
ReplyDeleteOh and third, to Rob, please define the word "spitballing" in the syntax you used. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of the group project but also having to answer open response questions about the stories and the price of progress
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of having several questions to chose from, but I personally like Marianna's idea the best about having to maybe act out parts, kinda of like we did last year for Oedipus Rex and Romeo and Juliet. I like the partner idea too but if we did that I feel like we should have part of it be individual work because partners are not always exactly fair. Unless they were maybe groups of four, like within our tables perhaps. And I was wondering the same thing, who is Sweet and Sour?
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of answering 3 out of 5 open response questions. I agree that this would allow use to answer questions that we were comfortable with, and therefore be able to provide better answers to them. I would like to see questions about how the stories we have read are all connected, how style affects the authors right and so on.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much agree with everyone here and think we should get 5 open response questions and be able to answer 3 of them. This would be a good way for us to prove we know the reading unit well.
