The Sound of Thunder : Question # 5
In your opinion, what theme is Bradbury conveying through the story? Think about:
The Butterfly effect?
the society Eckels returns to as compared with the rest of the society depicted at the beginning of the story
I think Bradbury is trying to convey a theme about freedom. He is saying that if we don't follow rules and watch what we're doing, bad things come out of it. In this instance the world was going great with a new president that everyone loved, but then Eckels stomps on a butterfly, which I think symbolizes their freedom, and they end they end up in a terrible dictatorship. More literally Bradbury is talking about a theory that little things like a mouse being killed effecting all organisms to come in the future, which makes sense when you think about it.
I think Bradbury is trying to say that you have to try to obey certain rules, to ensure that nothing bad happens. Also, I think he's trying to say that if one thing had been different, our whole entire life could have been changed and to be thankful that we live in the day that we do. Society was how we know it before he left, then it ended up being completely flipped around; things were spelled strangely and there was a different president. I think that the butterfly symbolized society, and if we stomp on it, like Eckels did with the butterfly, that our life could be completely different and have a negative outcome. I think he's trying to show us to be careful what we do in thi world and appreciate what we have.
I think that Bradbury was trying to say that if one slight thing was different in the past then the whole future could be different in either positive or negative ways. I think he was trying to show his audience that we should be thankful for what we have because if one thing in the past were to be different there could be a possibility that us humans wouldn't be here today. I also think he was trying to say that sometimes people ignore instructions, and miss important details. In this case, Eckels didnt follow the instructions to stay on the path and went off of it and ended up changing the whole future. I think the significance of the butterfly is that something so small and delicate can have such a strong impact on the world. Like Christine said, the butterfly could be symbolizing our society and we should take care of it and appreciate what we have because it could be changed or taken away when it is least expected.
I think a theme Bradbury is trying to convery to us is what you do now determines your future. When he stomped on the butterfly their whole society changed in tne future. Although its made up story that probably wouldn't happen he is trying to show us that the choices we make now are going to effect the rest of our lives.
I think that Bradbury is trying to convey to the reader that freedom is what it's supposed to be. Like what Jeremy said, if we mess with the system then bad things will happen. We should just follow the rules and do what we're told so that our future can be good for us. The bad decisions we make now will affect our future, in some ways the decisions will be not what we want.
To me, the theme of Bradburys story is that there is nothing too small; everything matters. This is conveyed well when Eckles stomps on the little butterfly killing it. his shows how some things (exspecialy humans) think they are better than other things in the world. But later on in the sstory when the same thing happens to Eckles when his society is a dictatorship, Bradberry means that the dictatorship is Eckles and Eckles is the butterlfy being squished. SO in a way his theme is also about karma, but more like nothing is more important or better than the next.
The theme of the story that there is a price we play for progress. Eckels changes the past slightly, and everything that had been worked for over the last million years could've been lost. The result of the government election and the language were different. Eckels just ran of the path set up for a couple of steps, and history was changed. We need to realize that even though we can, doesn't mean we will. The characters were able to go to the past, but that doesn't mean that they should've. Eckels changed the past and paid the price for it. We need to be careful with what we do.
I also agree with garrett that the theme of this story is the price we pay for progress. with everything that we end up making eventually goes down. Eckels went back and changed the past, which endeed up hurting him in the end wich is a good example of the price of progress.
I agree with Mikayla. I think the main theme in this story is that what happens to us now, and what decisions we make can affect us later. He clearly shows us this when Eckels steps on the butterfly in the past and it completely changes his future.
I agree with Shannon that the message Bradbury was trying to convey was that the choices you make now can affect your future. Even a seemingly small mistake can have an impact on your life. To me, this story just emphasizes the significance of making good choices and following the rules because anything you do could change everything.

To me, this story just emphasizes the significance of making good choices and following the rules because anything you do could change everything.
I think the theme that Bradbury is conveying through the story is that one little mistake could ruin all the progress that we have made. By Eckel killing that small little butterfly he ruined the future. An example of him ruining the future was that Keith was no longer the president. I also agree with Garrett in the saying, "just because we can, doesn't mean we should." If we are ever able to go back into time I don't think we should. Just by us touching or even walking off a path, like Eckel, could change everything that we have worked so hard to establish. People should really honestly think before they do something because each option has different outcomes and one of the outcomes of the options could be negative and the other outcome could be positive.
I think the theme of this story is that anything you do or say can effect your future. You should always be careful of your decisions and never regret anything later on in life. After Eckels kills the butterfly and returns to the future it has changed. Even the little mistakes you make can change everything.
The theme of this story is to make good choices and everything you do now, even the little things, is going to effect you somehow later in your life. I agree with Garrett when he said that just because we can do something doesn't when we should do it. Like in the story, just because they could travel back in time doesn't mean they should. They made one little mistake and it had a massive impact on everything that happened after that.
The theme of this story is the price we pay for progress. The time travel company took people inot the past for fun, but even the tiniest step can ruin the future, so why would anyone do it? Everyone was happy with Keith being president, saying is Duether was president, everything would be horrible, but they really wanted to shoot a dinosaur. Just by doing that they ruined the good thing they had. Just because Eckels stepped on the butterfly, the whole future changed.
My thought on the theme of this story is that good choices are very critical and important. It basically says that the things that happen now and the choices you make now can and will effect you later on in life and outcomes of other situations.
I would like to add on to my previous thoughts from before and saying that the significance of the butterfly is that one small thing can change bigger thhings, and that when the butterfly was stepped on in the story, the future can change because of something so little.
I think the theme of this story is to be very cautious with what you do because it might just affect the future of your life and many more to come. In this story it says the main character Eckels went back in time and stepped on a butterfly. He went back and some things were changed. Just one little thing can make a huge difference.
I think the theme of "The Sound of Thunder" is to be cautious of your actions. Doing one thing can change the whole outcome of events. You need to be cautious of what you do today because it could greatly effect tomorrow. The significance of the butterfly is a symbol for all things that seem so small and pointless, but in reality they are very important.
I agree with the point Jeremy made earlier, about the butterfly figuratively representing freedom and after the butterfly dies, a dictatorship arises. I also think the size of the butterfly signifies that something as small as a butterfly can result into something as massive as an entire government.
The theme that Bradbury is conveying is to think about the choices you make now and how they can affect you later in life. Its along the same lines as the envoirnmental footprint that humans are leaving on Earth. Whats happening now with all the emissions is going to greatly affect the future.
I think Bradbury is trying to say that there are always consequences to disobeying the rules. Sometimes breaking the rules can lead to something good but in this case it led to a complete alteration of the world. People don't usually think about how things will affect them later but they should. In the "Sound of Thunder" the butterfly was a symbol for the butterfly affect.
I think the theme Bradbury is trying to convey is that, small decisions in our past can have a major effect on our futures. For example when Eckels stepped on the butterfly from the past it affected his future by basically installing a dictatorship rather than having the president everybody was happy with. So this shows that little things can have major effects on parts of our lives that we value such as freedom.
I believe that what bradbury is trying to say, like max said, is that decisions that we make in our past will eventually come back and effect us in the future. Sometimes little things that you do can effect your life in a big way, we don't realize it at the time but in the future it will effect us in a major way
