SSR? 10, 25, or 47?

SSR is an important component of an ELA class that is designed to prepare you to become lifelong learners.
A person who takes time out regularly to read for pleasure in school is more likely to take that time and more to read for pleasure out of school. The more you read, the more fluid a reader you become, the better your vocabulary will be (if you read at your challenge level).

SSR is your choice. You many read in any school appropriate genre; ask me if you are not sure.
Read beyond novels--try history, science, biography, self-help, essays, humor--whatever.
Read magazines or newspapers.
Take the netbooks and read --many newspapers and magazines have great sites; so do TV channels.
Try reading other blogs...you can use the netbooks to discover ereading.
If you have an ereader (I have a kindle), bring it.
If you have an ereader app on your phone, you may use it--I have iBook and kindle apps.

Please comment: What would you like to for SSR this quarter?
5 ten minute periods?  2 periods of 25 minutes? Just one whole class?
Please say why, and what you plan on reading.

  1. One whole class because then you'd get a lot of reading done and not have to be interrupted.

  2. I think that a whole class for SSR would be a good idea because sometimes it takes more than 10 or 25 minutes to get involved in a book. If we were to have SSR for 25 minutes two times a week it might be hard to transition into learning. I also think that a good day to have one class completely reserved for just SSR would be Friday because many students are looking forward to the weekend and aren't in the state of mind to focus on learning.

  3. I think that a whole day would be nice for SSR. I think that Friday would be best for the day because then we could have a day to look forward to during the rest of the week.

  6. I also think it would be best to have a full class to read, and preferably Fridays since it would be a nice way to end the week. And I plan on reading Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis.

  7. I think we should do 2 periods of 25 minutes because 10 mins a day is too short and I would probably have a hard time staying focused on the reading for a whole class because we are right before lunch and I'm hungry.

  8. I agree with the majority and also think we should have one full class period for SSR. I don't like being interpreted while reading and would like to have Friday be a relaxing day of reading before the weekend.

  9. I plan on reading Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.

  10. I think we should have a whole period once a week to read. Its harder to get back into class once you spend 25 minutes reading and 5 minutes is too short. I don't know what I'm reading yet.

  11. For this quarter, I think that we should have just one whole period for SSR because then one is able to get into one's book, not be interrupted, and can read more. Some people don't read outside of school so having a whole period gives one the chance to read more and have the possibility of finishing a book in a shorter amount of time than usual. The day I think we should have this on are Fridays. I think Fridays would be perfect because it's right before the weekend and I know the last thing I want to do before a weekend is all this work and then forget about it on the following Monday.

  12. I think that we should have one whole period of SSR each week and i think it should be on a Friday. This would be a good idea because we wold get a lot of reading done at once and not get interrupted in the middle of a good chapter.

p.s. yayyy me and kelly and a lot of us agree :)

  13. I think it should be a whole period on Friday because if it's for 25 minutes someone might be at a good part in their book and not want to stop reading and go back to learning something else yet.

  14. I think that SSR should be the whole day on Friday. It will be an easy way to end the day and start the weekend. Like Mikayla said, most kids are not in the state of doing a lot of work, so i think reading for the period would be good.

  15. For this first quarter, i think we should try out reading our SSR books during the whole period. Monday through Thursday should be the days we work hard and really do the majority of our work for class and have Friday to relax and enjoy our books.

  16. I also agree that we should have a full period for SSR. Reading for 5 minutes is not enough time and doesn't let us get far into the story to see if we enjoy the book. I'm not sure what I plan on reading yet for SSR, but I hope it's good.

  17. I think we should have a full period for SSR and preferably Fridays because it would be a good way to end the week and it would allow us to get involved in the book without being interrupted. I plan on getting the book Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson, I have already read his other book so it should be good.

  18. I also think that it would be a good idea to have a full period for SSR because sometimes you need a while to get into a book and you won't have to be interrupted during your reading.

  19. I think that we should do 2 days of 25 mins becasue that way it breaks the week up more and i couldnt even finish a chapter in 10 minutes, and wouldnt be able to read for 50 minutes straight.

  20. I agree with most of my peers that we should read for one entire class session per week. That way we can cover more text due to the substantial amount of uninterrupted time available, which could possibly lead to improved comprehension of the material. It would also be great to have this occur on Fridays, as it could be a nice way to end the school week. Currently I don't have anything selected to read.

  21. I think we should have one class just for SSR. This way, we can focus on our reading. From my own personal experience, I read more and pay attention to more details when I read for a long time rather than fifteen minutes or even twenty-five minutes at a time. I'm not entirely sure on what I'd like to read, preferably a memoir, though.

  22. For SSR, I believe that we should read for 25 minutes on 2 separate days (potentially Tuesday and Thursday). This way class will be split up evenly and still have time for the days lesson.

I plan on reading non-fiction and science fiction throughout the year and possibly reading other genres.
