Dr.G: Brainstorming: Challenges of Change and Price of Progress

The first step in the writing process is brainstorming about the big picture question:
How  does literature show us how to think about life?

1. Use the literature we have read, heard and viewed this year as evidence:

  • Love and Marriage
  • The Veldt
  • The Pedestrian
  • The Sound of Thunder
  • There will come Soft Rains
  • Harrison  Bergeron
  • The Thrill of the Grass
  • Searching for Summer
2. Consider other books you have read or listened to, other TV shows, or films you have seen.

3. Finally, think about the stories you have written as an author--was part of your goal to get the reader to think about life?

Now, in your comments below, share your brainstorming about how literature can show us how to think about life. Make sure to refer to examples to support your claims about the connections between literature and life.

  1. Literature shows us how to think about life in so many different ways. One way is in "The Sound Of Thunder". You could change the future just by making a little mistake such as stepping on the path from the past. The other way was in "The Pedestrian" and the man was just walking and he was innocent, yet he was taken off in the police car. We just have to realize that anything and everything can change our lives and the way we look at them.

  3. Literature helps you think about life because each story you read has a special meaning to it. Each meaning is a life lesson for the reader. It is almost like the story's we read give us tips on life. For example in The Sound Of Thunder the lesson is to follow directions and you'll be fine. Additionally in The Veldt a lesson is to not get to attached to technology. In stories I have written my goal was to push a lesson across for the reader to understand and learn from this lesson.

  4. Literature can make us think about life in a variety of ways. Like how in "The Sound of Thunder" one simple mistake completely altered the future. And in the "Thrill of the Grass" a die hard baseball fan changes out the flashy turf of the field to the good old sod. Both of those stories had to do with the topic of change. Stories like those can push us to change things in our life as well.

  5. Literature shows us how to think about life because we express how we feel and our beliefs in what we what we write. In stories like "There Will Come Soft Rains" and "The Pedestrian" Ray Bradbury says what he think our world will be like in the future. He also says what he thinks the technology will be like. In "A Sound of Thunder" one little butterfly was killed and it altered the worlds history drastically. If you change one thing it can also change history.

  6. Literature can make us think about life because certain things in books can refer to what happens to people in real life.Like in the story the veldt the theme is to not take things for grant where if theirs more technology people can become more lazy because technology can do a lot for you. Literature can also tell us on what not to do. because there might be a story out there that might show us the effects of our actions

  7. Literature shows us how to think about life by the theme of the stories. In "Sound of Thunder" by Ray Bradbury, the theme is that a small change can have a big impact in the future. When Eckels killed the butterfly the whole future changed. There was a new president and a new language. In "The Veldt" the theme of the story was not to let technology control us. The family became so obsessed with technology that they couldn't live without it. It is giving us a warning about the influence of technology in our lives. In "Love and Marriage" the theme of the story is that its impossible to understand women. As soon as men understand that, the world will become more peaceful. All of these stories have a lesson or a warning about life for us.

  8. Literature helps up connect to life and shows us the views of others around us. We get wrapped up in our own thoughts and opinions on everything and sometimes we don't listen to the people around us and what they're saying, due to pride. However, when we read literature we can see the other views that we ourselves were originally too stubborn to consider before. We learn new things and are able to see the opinions of others backed up with facts and reasoning, giving us the opportunity to now make an educated choice. For example, in The Veldt, we learn more about the downfalls to letting technology control our lives. Many people would be thrilled with the technological ideas that The Veldt presents and without knowing the consequences they assume that it is a wonderful idea. The story helped us readers see the negatives to such a modern lifestyle. I can hypothesize that most of us didn't realize all of these consequences until we read this story.
Literature teaches us so many life lessons and the themes in each story send us important messages. We can develop more educated views when we read literature because we will have then seen several intelligently opinionated pieces that can shape our thoughts. We learn so much from reading, it's very important to connect to literature and learn about the other opinions out there.

  9. Literature shows us how to think about life in many different ways. When reading literature your mind goes somewhere else allowing you to think about one particular thing then your mind takes you different places considering all different types of possibilities. Literature tells you certain views of how certain concepts can be interpreted and that relates to life because if you are watching one thing happen it allows you to think of if you were in that certain situation or maybe you are one day it allows you to think and act the way you would want too. For example we read the book "The Sound of Thunder" that related to life because there are real life circumstances everyday that you are put in when listening to your superior come into play, and by seeing Eckels not listen to Travis it showed us that listening to what your supposed to do is very important. As you can see literature allows you to think of life in many ways.

  10. Literature can show us how to think about life in many ways. For example in "The Veldt", it teaches us that sometimes just because you can make something, doesn't mean you should. Many people think if it makes our lives easier, we should create it. However, in "The Veldt" Ray Bradbury proves that this is not true. He shows that sometimes the price of progress can be too high. Another example is in "A Sound of Thunder" Bradbury tries to show us that one mistake in our past, can effect our future for the rest of our lives.

  11. In literature, a major focus that authors have when they are writing is the theme that they would like to portray. The theme of a story has a purpose of teaching the reader a lesson that the characters in the story go through. However, literature is supposed to depict a lesson deeper than the lesson that the characters go through. These lessons make you think about life in different ways. Some stories have even more than one lesson. There is always a bigger picture in an authors writing than the actual words on the page. Some good examples of a lesson being taught from the theme of a story is in, "The Veldt," and, "The Sound of Thunder." "The Veldt" teaches us that anything you create can have more negative effects than benefits. In another one of Ray Bradbury's stories, "The Sound of Thunder," the theme is that one simple mistake can alter the future, no matter how big or small.

  12. Literature shows me how to think about life in so many ways, the way you view life. Like in "Searching For Summer", the two main characters, Lily and Tom, viewed their life in a hopeful view, even in some of the worst and loss of hope type of places they could be in. Bill from "Love and Marriage" viewed his life in a funny childish way. Your attitude in life and towards it is everything on what can happen in it. If you read closely, you can kinda tell or at least get a hint of the way characters view life. The literature is like an example of what some consequences and rewards are of viewing life a certain way in certain situations. Even in books like "Percy Jackson" by Rick Riordan, Percy views life in a positive, fun, but some what series way, this way he was always looking on the bright side, even when Kronos was about to take over the world, he was still cracking jokes and positive, almost no negativity. Yes some bad things happened to all of my examples, but so much good happened to them.

  13. A lot of ideas written in books, or songs, or shown in movies, could have happened, or could end up happening today. These ideas teach us life lessons and tell us that anything is possible. They make me wonder what the future will be like and remind me to follow my dreams. In the story, “Love and Marriage,” we learn that revenge will not fix your problems, sometimes it will even make them worse. “The Veldt” and “The Sound of Thunder” teach us that anything is possible and not to take advantage of technology. “The Thrill of the Grass” reminds you that if we want something done, you have to do it yourself. Certain movies today, such as “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” remind me to follow my dreams and that my dreams might come true with hard work and dedication.
