Dr. G: F451: Taking Notes 5-4-3-2-1 Style!

5-4-3-2-1 is a note-taking style I have adapted from the 3-2-1 model.

By reviewing a text or your notes and deciding what is important for a blog post, discussion, or paper, you are beginning to think about patterns and reading between the lines for the author's purpose or message.

In your comments, after reading pages 22-35:

#3: Label and bullet your 3  HOT Questions [note pages where the questions occurred to you]

#1: List your working theme or sentence about the novel's universal lesson
·       Sample: Bradbury tells us this story through Montag's experience because...
·       Sample: What I am learning from reading this novel that may be true for most people is ...

What part(s) of the book point you in this direction?

7 comments:

  1. #3: Why do rats, cats, and chickens have to be drowned? pg.28 Why do people call Montag "Guy," if he introduces himself as Montag? pg.31 Why do kids kill each other so much? pg. 34
#1: What I am learning from reading this novel that may be true for most people is try my best to not let what caused Montag and Clarisse's present day to be so bad.

  2. I am not sure about why the animals need to be killed, but rats carry diseases and feed on trash; often feral cats cause problems and attack other small animals. In Key West, Florida, chickens walk around like squirrels do here and are rather unclean. But isn't that mechanical hound scary?
Some men go by their last names--Montag seems like one of these. Hif full name is Guy Montag.
Page 34 and your last question make me stop and think about today and our current society. Why DO kids kill each other so much? I understand why Clarisse does not want to be "social" if kids in her generation are violent.

Your working theme--Prevent a terrible future if you can-- seems to be exactly what Bradbury keeps warning us about.

Keep up the good work, Alexis!

  3. 3. Why is Clarisse so comfortable with Montag?
Why does Montag still talk to Clarisse?
How has Montag changed since the beginning?
    1. Always step out of your comfort zone.

  4. 1. Why is Clarisse so interested in Montag? (Page 32)
    2. what does mildred take pills for? (Page 23)
    3. why doesn't mildred remember overdosing? (Page 23)

Working theme: you should always remain true to yourself. It's important to be your own person and think for yourself

  6. 1. Why does Charisse talk to montag so much? (Pg33)
    2. Why is Charisse not like the rest of the world? (Pg33)
    3. Why is montag so interested in books? (Pg37)

Theme: never blend in, always be yourself. Charisse describes the society where she lives and how she doesn't blend in. (Pg33) The children kill others and are always busy to notice anything.

  7. 3. Why do kids kill each other, and nobody really cares? Pages 33-34
Why is Mildred pretending that the night before never happened? Pages 22-24
Why didn't those firemen "like" Clarisse, like Montag does? Page 27
    1. Theme:
Bradbury tells us this story through Montag's experience because he wants us to see how the point of view of a person can change when you learn more about something.
