Nonfiction questions

Have you ever read any non-fiction on your own?
If not, why not?
If so, what did you read? Why?

There are many genre of non-fiction: biography, autobiography and memoir, philosophy, religion, history, science, sports, business, archaeology, education, health, medicine, cooking, travel, law, politics, crime, ecology, environment, exploration, careers, architecture, biology, genetics, chemistry, physics, technology, zoology, botany, culture, art, music, theatre, comedy.....the list goes on and on.

In fact, The New York Times Book Review is usually 3/4 non-fiction to 1/4 fiction. In the average bookstore, look around--mostly non-fiction. Most of us spent more of our college time reading more non-fiction than fiction. Yet, when we think about whether or not we are readers, we think about whether or not we read novels. I wonder, why?

At this point in your reading life, what kind of non-fiction do you want to try? Why?
Has anyone ever recommended non-fiction to you?
If you have a favorite non-fiction book, please share your suggestion in the comments, too.
Reading non-fiction is one of the ways to prepare for reading in college and career.

  1. I have not read nonfiction on my own, but I have read books based on true events. I'm not really sure why I haven't read any nonfiction books, i just haven't. I wouldn't mind reading one though.

  2. I would like to read some sort of nonfiction about word war 2 or the American revolution because those time periods interest me. I have never read nonfiction before unless children's books count. My favorite book as a child was called Flight, it was a story about Charles lindbergh flying across the Atlantic ocean.

  6. I have also read stories that were based on true events but havent really read any non-fiction on my own. I would like to read non-fiction because since its about stuff that has really happend you can get much more backround information on it if after reading you dont understand some things u can get them cleared up,i think schools use more fiction because it hasnt really happened so they cant just go onto the internet search what ever event the book is about and know what the story will be about

  7. I don't believe that I have ever read any non-fiction but it would be interesting do read some. Like Kelly, I've read many books based on true events. So far, non-fiction hasn't really caught my attention as something I would look forward to read, but I have yet to try it so I am unsure. I think that I would enjoy non-fiction about music or sports because those are interesting to me.

  9. I have read non-fiction before, seeing how alot of what people read is non-fiction, and they just don't know it, anything from newspapers to historical essays, to books can non-fiction. I would be interested in reading something about Egyptian, Roman, or Greek culture, really anyhthing about that seems like it would be a good read.

  10. I sometimes read non-fiction and I like to most read biographies and memoirs. Read about the lives of the people I like interests me and to see how they grew up and how they got to the place they are now. Probably my favorite piece of non-fiction is Big Man:Real Life and Tall Tales which is a biography about Clarence Clemons, aka Big Man, who is the saxophonist for the E Street Band. I already knew a lot about the band but read his book told me a lot about him and other members of the band, like inside stories you would only hear from the person themselves.

  14. I know I used to read a lot of non-fiction when I was little. I read many biographies and true stories, although I cannot remember who or what they were exactly about. I think they were part of some historical series or something of that nature. More recently, I haven't read much non-fiction and I don't know why.

  15. I don't remember reading any non-fiction on my own. It just seems that fiction is usually more interesting because it's made up. I would be open to reading non-fiction, though.

  19. I have read a couple nonfiction books about World War 2. One was a journal of a soldier that was in the war. I read them because I have always thought war was interesting. I would like to read any kind of nonfiction about history mostly from the time period between the American Revolution and the Vietnam war as I think that was the most interesting.

  20. I also don't remember reading any non-fiction books on my own. I would like to read a non-fiction book sometime in the future. If I do, I would like the book to be based on sports which catch my interest the most.

  21. The only non-fiction I have read are autobiographies by people I'm interested in. Since I like to watch baseball and listen to music, I have read Joey Kramer's book, Anthony Kiedis', David Ortiz', and Johnny Damon's. I enjoyed reading all of them, as I find it very interesting to learn about the lives of people like that. I don't like to read non fiction aboout events very much though, like wars. I just sort of find that boring. Of those four autobiographies I've read, I think Anthony Kiedis' was most entertaining, it's called "Scar Tissue"

  22. I haven't read any non-fiction on my own besides short works such as newpaper articles or articles on the internet. I guess I haven't read any because I find fiction more appealing and it is easier to get into than non-fiction. However, if I found a non-fiction book that was geniunely interesting I would be very willing to read it. So, its not that I am not unwilling to read non-fiction I just haven't looked for or found any non-fiction that truly interests me.

  23. I prefer to read non-fiction over fiction because it is easier to relate and imagine real people inreal life events. One autobiography that my brother suggested to me was by Jack Falla entitled, "Home Ice." I enjoyed reading it but my favorite non-fiction piece was also an autobiography prefered by my other brother called "Five Years of My Life" by Murat Kurnaz. In this book Murat Kurnaz talks about his experience at Guantanamo Bay as a prisoner.
