- hwo do those features make the process of reading non-fiction seem different from non-fiction?
- What are your questions about strategies for reading non-fiction?
- Do the differences make non-fiction seem more or less difficult to read?
1. This book has a guide inside. Basically it says how the book is nonfiction and her journey to finding all the information.
ReplyDelete2. Well fiction books on the back it summarize what the book is about, so the guide gives me a preview about what happened to Henrietta Lacks.
3. It's different from fiction because it actually happened. But usually when I read fiction I get so involved into the story that I believe it is true, but then of course after I'm done reading I know none of that actually happened.
4. No Questions
5. I thinks it is more difficult to read non-fiction because you never know if the author got all the information right and put every detail into the book. When I read non-fiction I always hate how some books have more information than the one I just read on the same topic.

ReplyDeletethis novel has some different things compared to fiction would be that that sometimes they give certain statistics on what happened. it makes it better becasue you can really tell for example how many people died during a certain war or battle. it makes it somewhat different because you dont really have to be left hanging at a certain point because they give you exactly what happens. i do not have any questions, it makes non-fiction easier to read
ReplyDeleteMy book has a photograph on the jacket of the book, which most fiction books do not have. Other than that, the story is a lot like fiction. The main character tells his story in the first person, which is like a fiction book told through the eyes of the main character. It is different from fiction because I have heard of some of the events that were written in the book. An example would be how Larry Bird played against Magic Johnson in the NCAA championship game. I think the differences make it easier to read because I know about some of the events that he tells about in the book.

ReplyDeleteIt's based solely on facts, which a novel isn't. Facts, inlike fiction, can be easier to relate to perhaps because non-fiction is based on real events and situations. Non-fiction and fiction stories alike are written in a similar fashion and are just based on different principles. Non-fiction seems like it would be harder to read, although potentially more interesting and enjoyable to read due to it being based on actual events. I don't have any questions for reading strategies.

ReplyDelete1. There aren't any apparent features that differ from a fiction book, aside from the fact that it says "my life with asperger's" on the front.
ReplyDelete2. Everything about it seems to be the same as fiction, but maybe as I start reading I will find more features that differ.
3. Nonfiction will be different because I know that everything described is true, and the author is describing his life.
4. Is nonfiction read the same way as fiction?
5. Not necessarily more difficult, but just more straightforward.
Good start, everyone--thanks for tackling these questions first.
ReplyDeleteRemember--only fiction books are called novels!
Sometimes non-fiction books do have things that novels do not--photos as Alex mentioned, introductions or prefaces, notes at the end with resources the author used, some even have an index for finding mention of a particular person or topic.
Often, non-fiction writers describe their writing process or thank people who helped them.
I have been confused by authors who writer differently about the same subject--but there are many people writing from different viewpoints and perspective on just about every topic--and they don't always share information with each other so they can have an exclusive approach. Some are just written in different time frames and are doing the best they can when separated by time and geography.
Even writing about one's own life can be a hard task--do you tell everything, really everything? Some people who have written memoirs have gotten in trouble for "fictionalizing" their lives--quite simply, they lied to make it sell better! Now that makes me mad!
1. This book has features such as an Acknowledgments page and it has pictures from his life, and it uses "I" a lot throughout the book.
ReplyDelete2. These features make it similar to fiction because of the use of "I" because if the fiction piece is in first person, it would use that a lot.
3. These features make it different from fiction because something made up doesn't have photos from real life, also it isn't necessarily about the person who wrote it, so they wouldn't thank the people that helped them with the book with an Acknowledgments page like they would in non-fiction.
4. No questions
5. I think the differences make non-fiction less difficult to read because if its based on real life, it is most likely easier to relate to it than something that is totally made up.
THis book has a ton more pictures than I have seen in most novels. Also it has a glossary and works cited. These features don't really make it at all like fiction because in fiction you need to think for yourself and create your own pictures in your head. The reason it is different from fiction is because it is based on fact alone and the pictures inside are there so you don't need to use your imagination and think of a picture in your head. I really don't have many questions on my book specifically. I guess that the pictures help to make the reading easier because it is more interesting and gives you a visual to relate to.
ReplyDeleteMy book is different from most because it takes place in the present but goes back to the narrators years in college after every chapter. The actual story behind the book seems like some sort of movie or a piece of fiction. Instead of this non-fiction book being about someone who researched an event and wrote about it, "tuesday with Morrie" is a true story written by someone who lived through and studied death. I think non-fiction is easier to read because ones imagination isn't being stretched and connections can be easily made.
ReplyDeleteI am impressed that you are finding non-fiction easier to read becuase the author provides you with facts--with photos, glossaries, guides, acknowledgments, and a sense of lived experience. In many ways, non-fiction is ven more personal than fiction because you can trust the author and verify what the person tells you.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work--I haven't heard from everyone yet-- and I want to know what you observe about your non-fiction reading experience and how it differs from reading fiction.

1.This novel has pictures and not just pictures they stick in there because it kind of fits like in our text book, they are real pictures that go with the story and usually noevels don't have photographs. It is alsoso true unlike fiction, so it is weird to think everything being said is true.
ReplyDelete2. It seems similar to reading fiction because when I read fiction it feels like what im reading is true like non-fiction and it is hard to believe it is fake.
3. It doesn't seem diffrent at all reading non-fiction from fiction because whether im reading either genre I usually get so into the novels that I always think the story is true. The only diffrence is getting to look at the pictures and know that this is what everything/one really looked like.
4. no questions
5. The diffrences don't make reading non-fiction hard to read if anything they make it easier, looking at pictures helps me see everything better.
1. This book is completely true, and most things are not made up. It has actual facts and is legit.
ReplyDelete2. It doesn't really make reading nonfiction and fiction similar because nonfiction is all true and ficion is made up.
3. see two
4. I don't have any quesions.
5. The differences make nonfiction much easier to read because you can actually learn things and connect to them more easily because it's all true and not fake.
1. This book has real facts based off of a real life journey, but can become boring at times because it is all factual, while fiction adds in extra details that makes the story more imaginative.
ReplyDelete2 and 3.These features make the process of reading non-fiction seem similar and different to fiction becasue it is still a story read and approached with the same reading strategies.
4.So far, I understand my novel and do not have any questioins about the strategies for reading non-fiction.
5. I think that the differences do not really affect the difficulty of the read. I have found fiction, as well as non-fiction novels both hard and easy to read.
1. The book "The Devil In The White City" has a map of chicago and a map of the World Fair and the layout of the buildings. Also it shows a page with the author and his accolades and relations towards writing.
ReplyDelete2. It doesn't at all because this book is unlike most non-fiction books. Also this takes place back in the late 1800's-1900, making it a piece of U.S. history.
3. It gives the reading a sense of mystery and importance because it shows our history and what is true.
4. No questions.
5. I dont see a difference i just enjoy this story more because its a true story.
1. This book is different than a novel because it is all true facts about the authors life.
ReplyDelete2. They seem similaar because it has an order of events leading up to a big event in the persons life.
3. They are different because fiction is a true story or real facts but non-fiction is true.
4. I don't really have any questions.
5. The differences make non-fiction better to read because its a lot easier to get into knowing its not made up and that it really happened.
1. This nonfiction book is different because it has big chapters with dates that the authors wrote in it.
ReplyDelete2.I don't think this book compares a lot to fiction because of the factual writings and how its layed out.
3.
4. No questions
5.I think it makes it easier to read because its easy to keep track of and remember certain events
1. The book I am reading has real facts spoken by the people who really lived it. Also the main idea of the book is related to all the chapters, but all the chapters are different. For example, from chapter 1 to 2 the relation between the two is that the therapist in chapter 2 helped the girl in chapter 1 but chapter 2 is all about the therapist.
ReplyDelete2. Those features are kind of similar to fiction because all the ideas have to come from somewhere, so the ideas in non-fiction are definately true.
3. These features are different in many ways. It is much easier to read than fiction and just the voice is different.
4. I have no questions.
5. I think non-fiction is much easier to read than fiction.
Like Garrett said, non-fiction is based on facts alone, which fiction isn't. I like this because that affects the way it's written, being more direct and thus easier to read. I don't have any questions right now but I haven't really gotten much into the book yet so I probably will later on.
ReplyDelete1. this book dosnt have a catchy title, it the subject is the title. Also, it has real facts and follows the storyline of her life that is different from a novel.
ReplyDelete2. those features make the process of reading non fiction similar to reading fiction that it has a story line and is just the story of some real persons life, instead of a fictonal characters life.
3. The differences is that it follows a time line and dosnt flash back and or jump forward becasue its history and cant be messed with for it to be true.
4. I dont have any questions in mind right now about reaading non-fiction becasue that "reading non-fiction" page in our books really helped.
5. i think they make non-fiction easier to read because it is more cronological and less bouncing around everywhere making it easier to follow.
1. My book is split into three sections, rather than chapters. It has sectiosn for Opportunity, Responsibilty, and Community.
ReplyDelete2.This makes it similar to fiction because it splits the "story" up into parts that can be taken separately, and then put together to find an overall theme or plot.
3. The features are different because rather than being split into many small chapters they are only 3 long sections, so it might be harder to follow along.
4. Reading nonfiction seems pretty straightforward, so I don't really have any questions about it.
5. It seems as if reading nonfiction is a lot easier because there aren't really characters, plots, and emotions to keep track of.
Nonfiction books, obviously, have real characters and real stories and events. They also often have pictures and are set up differently from a chapter novel. Also, I think non-fiction is easier to read, becuase it's almost like someone is telling you a story, whereas fiction's dialogue is often fabricated.
ReplyDeleteWell one of the first things that is noticable of how my book is that it has three contributors , which would be unusual for a fiction book to have. Also, the book states that it was based off of seven years of research and personla experience, and fiction usually does not require such extensive research. In general the book reads like any novel would except its centered around the main character, much like a fiction novel would introduce characters. It makes it seem different though because it stays centered around the character who is a real person and the events around their life. I feel like it is easier to read simply because it is straight forward and isn't trying to subtley send a message.

ReplyDeleteMy book has a section of actual pictures of the people the book is about. The pictures help you put an image in your head throughout the story, which is how you usually read fiction. Nonfiction is a bit easier to read because it is more straight forward.
