In your comments below, how is your text set up?
Bulleting, listing or outlining is most helpful so that readers can tell at a glance what the features of non-fiction organization are.
- Include parts like preface, introduction, table of contents, acknowledgements, chapters, endnotes, index, etc.
- Starting at the title page, list all the sections of your book.
- If chapters are numbered, then #1-whatever is fine.
- If chapters are titled, please list them.
The purpose of having everyone post the structure of his or her text is to demonstrate the similarities and differences in the way non-fiction texts are organized.

Part 4:Where I Stand
The fist few pages of my book, The Diary of Anne Frank, are pages of her diary that she wrote in her handwriting. Next is the title page and then the "foreword" section of the book. It gives background info that one might not have know about Anne Frank and what she went through. ALso it tells about her family and how her father decided to publish the diary. After the foreword, the diary begins on June 12, 1942. From there on all of the "chapters" are really dates of her diary entries, and there are a lot of them, sometimes 3 to a page, so I am not going to type all of the dates here.

I know those of you with many titled chapters have cramps in your wrists and fingers, but I really appreciate seeing how your texts are organized. And I know the class community will learn through your efforts--so thank you!
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be helpful if novelists titled their chapters? I like how non-fiction writers do prepare readers for each section with a title. Do you?
I noticed that sometimes the writers title sections also? Do you think grouping the chapters under sub-headings would be helpful, too?
Again, Thanks for your work--I do appreciate it.

Author Background
My book begins with a page "Praise for Aron Ralston and Between a Rock and a Hard Place" and then continues to the title page. There is another page saying "Passion: That which I suffer, allow, endure, is done to me." A section of "The Odyssey" is written by Homer on the next page. The next two pages contain a map of states such as Colorado, Arizona and Wyoming, all of which were where Ralston was on the day his story began. Then there is the "Prologue: Circulating With the Robbers Roosters"
