  1. It seems that any piece of writing that has some humor to it will be more entertaining to anyone who reads it, and Cosby is very good at that judging from what we've read. Also, he uses strong dialogue and lots of it, which we learned is important to an engaging story. Also having a strong point of view with sensory details can make a reader feel like they are looking through the character's eyes.

  2. Pablo Neruda's poem has strong elements in it and is a very interesting poem. The repetition of "her" is consistant throughout the poem and emphasizes what he is feeling. The personification in the beginning of the sky and stars helps with the imagery and gives the reader a clear picture of what they are reading. The actual sound of the poem is very soft and it goes along with the feeling of night time that you get when reading it. The tone of the poem is dark because of the subject he talking about but that also goes along with the feeling also. The elements of this poem I can use to enhance my own writing is the clear imagery to form the tone and feeling of the poem, and to also use repetition if there is something I want to emphasize.

  3. I am writing a poem and after reading Pablo Neruda's poem I know how I can make mine better. In his poem he really emphasized the word her because it was all about the girl and for my poem it's all about hiding the truth. So I now know to really get my point across I will have to use repetition. Also to keep the same tone throughout the poem.

  4. It is good to see that you are reading like writers and learning about choices...
Remember that these choices are options. The options you choose should have something to do with your subject and your audience.Of course, your audience can be general and inclusive or it can be very narrow.
    Your choices should follow accordingly.

  5. I'm writing fiction for this assignment. I liked how Bill Cosby worked in some humor into his memoir. It made it better to read. The dialogue was good, and I loved the point of view. It's mostly conversation, and it makes it more easy to follow and more realistic. I am definitely going to make my story have some humor in it, I think.

  6. I noticed that humor in fiction can help set a tone or a mood for the story, also it is used as comic relief in Bill Cosby's piece. I realized that dialogue that is used rather than details, makes it easier to depict something. Not only that but poetry can obviously have some humor to it as well.

  7. I am writing poetry and I think I can take some things from the poem we read in class to add to my poem. The first draft of my poem is bland and could use devices such as similes, personification, or metaphors.

  8. The thing I could take out of Cosby's memoir is that using humor can make your writing much more interesting to read. He also uses a lot of dialouge in his story instead of providing very detailed descriptions which developers the characters more than the setting.

  9. I am going to be writing a short story, therefore I focused more on Cosby's writing. From reading his piece of work I learned that it is better to use a lot of dialogue to tell the story rather than just long detailed paragraphs. This helps the story flow and become easier to read, for me at least. Also with the dialogue as a writer you won't necessarily need to tell every detail about a character, you can have them build their own personalities with what they say.

  10. Tremendously insightful reading--not only are learning what lakes a literary work sing, you are learning to make choices as a writer yourself.
I am looking forward to richer imagery, more dialogue, and--of course--some humor! Literature does NOT have to be tragic...

Those of you who haven't posted--I am looking forward to your comments.

  13. I am also writing fiction, so I lookeed more closely at Cosby's piece. As Ryan said, dialouge helps convey the story better and make it flow. I will incorporate that aspect into my work. Not only does dialouge help make it flow, but it also helps the reader get to know the characters better and it makes the story, overall, more interesting.

  14. I am writting poetry, like Neruda I will probably use metaphors and repetition. I like the way repetition sounds and I will deffenitly take that element from Neruda's poem. I think that repetiton will enhance my writing because it helps you drill the point in.

  15. I like that Cosby used humor to make it more enjoyable to read but it also got the message across about how important it is to tell the truth. I agree with Shannon that Neruda's poem makes his point very strongly because he uses so much repetition.

  16. I am writing fiction and the things that most stood out to me in Cosby's piece on telling the truth is that you dont need to be compleatly serious to get across a serious point. I aslo noticed that putting dioluge into a piece helps the reader to understand the character more so than just by a narrator describing them. It gives you a feel for their style not just the authors style. I will keep that in mind for my writing.
