  3. So far, I am really enjoying The Help. I have only had time to read two chapters, but so far it is really good. I like how it is written in first person because we get a sense of what Aibileen's voice sounds like through the diction. I am looking forward to reading more.

  4. I have only read a few pages into the story, but so far I like it a lot. I like how each character has their own way of talking so voices appear in my head. I feel like I can hear Aibileen's voice.

  5. I have read the first two chapters in The Help so far, even though it's still just kind of setting up the story, I find it very entertaining, and you can see some hints of conflicts that may arise. Like Aibileen has had a "seed" planted in her after her son died, and she says it's beginning to grow because of things like the new bathroom, so that points towards how she thinks about the prospect of changing things. Also, I really like how the book is written. It is written in informal speech just the way a maid back in the sixties would speak and think, so it makes it very easy to feel like you're in the story and see things through another person's eyes. I peeked into the next chapter, and it looks like we will be switching to the perspective of Minny, which should be interesting.

  6. I have read the first couple chapters so far in "the Help" and honestly I haven't really formed an opinion yet, it really is pretty easy to understand, and there isn't a terrible accent to decipher. Overall I don't have any complaints about the book, but I'm not sure how much I like it just because I am only through a couple chapters.

  7. I have read the first couple chapters of The Help and I am enjoying it so far, even though it is still early in the story. I like that it is written informally, just like a maid back then would actually talk. It isn't too difficult to read and understand so it really helps to put yourself in that time period and it feels like you are there.

  8. I have only read a couple of pages so far, but I like it. I'm excited to read more and see what happens. I want to see how the characters change throughout the story and I just feel like it is a book worth reading.

  9. Like most others above me, I have read the first two chapters of the book. I really don't have an opinion of it yet, because it is still a little early for me to really get what the plot is all about. The one opinion I do have is that I do not like how it is written the way they would have actually talked back then. I can understand it just fine but it just annoys me how it isn't written in proper English.

  10. I have read the first two and a half chapters. I can imagine the characters talking and I can hear them talking to me. I'm excited to continue reading the book. Unlike what Brian said, how it annoys him how it isn't written in proper English, I like that. It's different than any other book I've read and it's original.

  11. Im not that far into The Help, but so far I don't mind the book. I haven't got to form a deep opinion because I need more information on the plot. Like others I enjoy how it is written with the accents of the characters because it makes me feel like I can understand the person.

  12. I'm pretty far into The Help. I really like this book. It's a very well written book, and so far definitely one of my favorites. Like Mackenzie, I enjoy the fact that it isn't proper English. It helps you get a better feel for the characters and what they are really like. You can find out a lot about a person by the way they talk and what they say.

  13. I've read about 5 chapters so far and i really like it. Its really easy to get into. After reading as much as i have i just want to know whats going to happen next. I like how its from 3 different people point of view. Overall this book seems like its going to be a good book to read.

  15. I am not that far into The Help, but so far I like the story. The dialect gives the story kind of an authentic kind of feel. It kind of makes the story feel like it is being told in person by the characters. Also, I like that there are a bunch of conflicts introduced early in the story. They are kind of hard to follow, but it makes the story more interesting.

  16. I have only read during SSR, so I'm not far into the book. I have met a couple of the characters and was introduced to the plot, and so far I've liked it. On Amazon.com, the negative reviews were based around their opinions of the dialect used. Some of those people found it hard to read and distracting, but I dont find it to be.

  17. I have only read one chapter into the book, so I can't judge the book that much, but so far I am not very interested in the story. It doesn't seem like I am going to like this story based on the first chapter because so far it has been boring.

  18. I am only one chapter into the book, so I cant say that I love it or hate it. However, so far it has been entertaining and seems to be a pretty easy read, because it is not slow and manages to keep my attention while reading. So far it has done a good job of introducing me to characters and letting me make my first impressions of them.

  19. I like the book so far. I already saw the movie so it's kindof hard to try and put the names in the book to the characters in the movie. I dont like seeing a movie first because then you can't form your own interpretations of how the characters look, talk, etc., but I'm still enjoying reading it.

  20. I am proud of you for admitting it is too early to give your definitive view on the book--youa re being fair.
Also, good for you for dealing with the topic of dialect--it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Writers are just now, in the last 10 years or so, experiementing with multiple points of view in the same novel. I like how it mixes the perspectives and how I have to decide who to believe and trust. You will be reading more and more books like taht in the future.

If you haven't posted, even though it is early, give your first impression...you can change your mind, you know.

  21. So far into the book i do enjoy it. I have not seen the movie yet so im going in somewhat blind, i dont know everything that happens but i do know what its about overall. Something i do not like is the slang that is used because although it makes it sound much more realistic sometimes it is hard to understand what they are really meaning to say. i do enjoy reading it so far

  22. I am also not too far into The Help, but from what I've read so far I can tell I will like it. The way the characters talk makes the book a lot more interesting. Although it can be difficult to read at points and I find myself rereading lines.

  23. So far the novel is alright. Only finished with the first chapter I am finding that the dialect is hard to understand at times but it isn't interfering with the plot of the book. Other than the dialect it seems like an easy book to read and I am interested to know what lies ahead in the novel.

  24. SLANG. it's hard when you are outside the group that is using it. Truly, I think of slang as a conversational fence that protects the people inside and keeps others outside. If you listen, you can figure it out and open the gate to get inside.
Be patient...(and there are slang dictionaries for every kind of slang there is--find them and use them!).

  25. The trailer of the movie that we watched in class helped set a setting and character sketch for me about the characters and upcoming characters. Also i like the dialogue so far because it shows how a person could really talk, not like a formal paper was made into a story. i want to keep reading on.

  26. Like Rob said, watching the trailer gives me a better understanding of the characters and plot of the novel. Iv only read a couple chapters so far and I feel like I can get used to the dialect and the characters in it. I'm interested to see what lies ahead and how the story unfolds

  27. I like the novel. I honestly didnt think i was going to be i love the feeling it gives you by taking you back through time and into the world of these women down south 70 years ago. Its fun to see how different people are in the north to down south and i would really like to see this movie once im done with the book.
