Is there anything familiar here? Although I have never read Harry Potter, I am curious to know if you see some relationships to those novels and movies? How about to Lord of the Rings? Do we still value these qualities? Have we moved on to another definition of hero?
2. How much control would you say the characters have over their lives?
- Uther's passion for Igraine and the way he makes her his wife
- What happens to Igraine's sister and daughter after her wedding
- Merlin's comment that Arthur is destined for glory and the instructions he gives for Arthur's care
- Arthur's discovery that he is heir to the throne
3. In your opinion, does Arthur deserve to be king?
- the sacrifices other people must make to bring him to power
- the support he receives from the common people
- the kind of person he seems to be
2. When it comes to controlling their own lives, the male characters have a lot of control, but the female characters have no control over their lives. Uther was able to get what he wanted in the end, being Igraine, and it all worked out perfectl for him and all the male characters were somehow able to get everything they set out to do. But the female characters on the other hand had no control because Igraine really had no choice in whether she wanted to be Uther's wife if not, and her sister and daughter were forced to marry.
ReplyDelete3. I think Arthur kind of does deserve to be king because he seems like a loyal person, even at such an early age. Even though pulling a sword out of a stone doesn't seem like it would be able to tell whether he is a good king or not, he was the only one that could do it and when he found out that he was going to be king, he was very humble about it, saying to his father (or so he thought) that whatever he wishes is already granted. Also before he was decided to be king, his brother asked him go to get his sword for him and he did, so that kind of tells you what kind of person he is and he seems very loyal to the people close to him.
Loyalty and humilty are set forth as values in these European myths and legends for powerful people which is very different than the simple possession of physical strength that dominate other cultures of this time and those that preceded it.
ReplyDeleteDo you think the idea of Christianity might have influenced what this culture saw as important qualities in leadership?
2. I think the males have control over their lives and the females don't, and the males are actually able to exert themselves and control the females' lives in this time period, like Uther did to Igraine. All the women, like the daughter and sister are forced to marry certain men after her wedding, they have no say in the matter.
ReplyDelete3. Yes I think Arthur deserves to be King. not just because he pulled the sword from the stone though, as though that does show he is strong and unique, it doesn't necessarily make him a good leader. Overall he seems like a humble person that would not abuse his power and would use it to benefit the common people, who support him being crowned.
1.I agree with Rachel and also think that the men had plenty of control over their lives, but on the other hand women did not have any control. Although Uther has a passion for Igraine, she did not get to chose to be his wife. Also after her wedding her sister and daughter had to marry also. So it seems like the men took control of everyone's lives whether the women liked it or not.
ReplyDelete2. In my opinion I do think Arthur deserves to be king because not only was he the only person who could pull the sword out of the stone, but he was never stuck up about being king, he was very kind to everyone and loyal to his people.
2. I also agree with rachel that in this story the males are much more controlling of their lives and even are in control of some of the womens lives also. Most of the male characters got what they wanted and set out to achieve. On the other hand the women didnt realy get what they wanted or didnt get a say, for example Igraine had no choice wether or not she wanted to be married.
ReplyDelete3. I also agree that arthur should be kind because although he is pretty young to be a king he is a very kind and loyal person which is important. Pulling a sword out of a rock is great but not neccisarly great enough to declare you a king but i believe that he deserves it.
2. I think agree with rachel that the men in this story have alot of control and you can tell this is true from looking at the time it was written in and the laws that were still around for women. The wowmen such as Igraine in this story show that they have the will to control their own lives, but in the end they dont have the right.
ReplyDelete3. In my opinion, Arther should be king. But i also think that he should have to wait and be trained for a few years first becasue she was chosen at such a young age. He already has good morals and a good heart, he just would be able to be a better king if he had the chance to learn the trade before he has to make huge decitions to rule.
2.I think that the men have complete control over their own lives, although they have to abide to laws which could restrict them from doing certain things. Also, I think that the woman have little say in what they can do therefor they have little control of their own lives.
ReplyDelete3. I think that Arthur does deserve to be king. He is respected and seems to be loyal to the people and his friends and family.
2. I agree with Rachel that the men in the story had all of the power. Men were able to do what they wanted and were mostly in control. The woman did not get to live their life the way they wanted and depended on the men to make their decisions for them.In the story Uther got his wish of getting Igraine because she had no choice whether she wanted to be with him or not.
ReplyDelete2. I also agree that Authur should be king because he did not do anything wrong to not deserve it. He atleast deserved the chance to show that he would be a good king. He did not let being king get to his head and still remained worthy to his family members such as his brother. This proved that he would do the same to his people and that they could always trust him to do something. I also think that Arthur deserved to be king because he did not let it get to his head and he did not brag about it.
2. I agree with Rachel that the male characters have morecontrol of their lives throughout the novel. Uther conceives a son with Igraine by tricking her into thinking he is the duke, so Igraine really had no knowledge or control over the situation.
ReplyDelete3. I believe Arthur does deserve to be king because he was born to a king and seems noble. I believe he is noble because he was trying to get a sword to give to Sir Kay and would not stop until he fulfilled his duty. When he happened upon the sword in the stone he didn't even read the inscription about the true-king and he just took it out to fulfill his duty.
I believe that the male characters have more control over their lives than the famales. I believe this because the males can control what they are going to do in the future but the females cant. For example, Uther wants to marry Igraine, and he ends up marrying her. Igraine had no say in the process, it was all Uther and the male characters.
ReplyDeleteI believe Arthur deserves to be king because he was the one to pull the sword from the stone. Also, he seems to be the type of character who would take care of the people of his kingdom.
2. When it comes to controlly their own lives, the men are all set and have a lot of control but the women do not. All the men seemed to get everything they wanted in life but the women did not really have a say. For example Igraine's sister and daughter were forced to get marry.
ReplyDelete3. I think that Arthur has potential to be king but doesn't necessarily deserve it. Pulling a sword out of stone should not determine who gets the most control and be king, but have the right personality and qualityies needed to be a good leader should. Arthur seems reliable and the kind of person others would look up to, which is why he sort of deserves to be king.
2I thought that the rich male characters had the most control over their lives. They could choose who they wanted to marry, and then 'force' those women to marry them, an example is Uther and Igraine. Even though you would not want to marry someone at this time you could be put into a forced marriage for the good of two families and such.
ReplyDelete3 I think that Arthur has the traits that it takes to become a king but not necessarily the experience that it takes to do so. But, the best way to get experience is by doing, so therefore he could get the most experience from actually leading and learning from mistakes instead of just learning how to.
I agree with Rachel that the male characters have a lot more control over their lives than thw female characters do. Since Uther wanted Igraine but couldn't have her, he had Merlin enable him to impersonate the Duke. The Duke had no control over this and neither did Igraine. Also, it may appear that Uther didn't have control over giving Arthur to Merlin but it was him that promised that he would. Igraine was the one who had no control over it.
ReplyDeleteI do think that Arthur deserved to be king but the way that people got him there was wrong, like Merlin killing the Duke and tricking Igraine, but Arthur had no control over that. He seems to have been a modest man and worthy of kingship.
2. I agree with Rachel when it comes to the control the characters have over their own lives. The men were able to do control everything, but the women had no say or control in the way things worked out. King Uther ended up getting Igraine in the end.
ReplyDelete3. I'm kind of on the fence about Arthur. He just figured out he was the heir to the throne and didn'tlive in that lifestlye of being around his father, the king, to see what happened when one is ruler. Yes he appears to be nice and loyal, but he just pulled a sword out of a rock. the king should be someone who has some knowledge of what it will take to be king. I know most people say he should be, but i don't know. Being king shouldnt just be about being kind. someone can be kind, but be horrible at doing something.
2)I would say that in the story, like Rachel said the male characters have the most control of the most control over their lives than the females. The female characters basically have to do whatever they are told and only really have free will when they are not being oredered around. However, I wouldn't say that the male characters have complete control. For example Merlin brings up that Arthur is destined for glory, which pretty much means his life is already decided for him. I still believe that the women have less control though just due to the fact that Uther forced Igraine to marry him, as well as make her sister and daughter marry.
ReplyDelete3)I think Arthur deserves to be king despite all the sacrafices people must make for this to happen because overall he is clearly loyal and not power hungry for he didn't freak out after pulling the sword out of the stone and didn't boast about becoming king just accepted it as the honorable position it is.
The characters have little control of their lives. They all have destinies, like Arthur is going to be given to foster parents and will grow up to claim the throne and be a great leader before he is even born. Some characters were destined to get what they wanted, like King Uther. Merlin was destined to grant the king's wish and to become the guardian of young Arthur. The characters had little control over their lives.
ReplyDeleteArthur deserves to be king. He is the only one of royal blood and is the only one who can remove the sword from the stone. His father, who was king, gave him his blessing before he died to rule over the realm. Although he was young, he was the most deserving of the throne, moreso than any of the nobles - the reason being he was of royal descent.
2. I think the male characters had most control over their lives more than the female characters.Uther was able to make Igraine his wife probably because of the time period back then, most females didn't choose and decide who they wanted to marry. I don't think the female characters had much say.
ReplyDelete3.I believe Arthur deserves to be king also because he seems noble and loyal. Although he is young for a king, I think he could be a strong one and also a people's king.
2. i think that the males in this excerpt have all the power and control other characters such as the females. The men seem to be subjected to taking superior ranking than the women. The males got what they wanted when they wanted no matter what, it was just a matter of time.
ReplyDelete3. Arthur seems to be comfortable and acts like a king but he doesnt actually deserve it 100%, he lacks the full package and doesnt present the ruling trait.
2. Like everyone else i think that the rich men had control over their lives and the women didn't. Arthur had no control over what happened to him though. Once Uther and Igraine got married her sisters were married off to his family because of his request. Igraine had also never planned to be with him that night her husband died in the first place.
ReplyDelete3. I think that Arthur deserved to be king because after his family gave him away since he was destined for glory he deserved to be able to take over his real fathers throne. He also deserved it because of the life he had to live because of being given away to people he wasn't really related to and ordered him to do things.
2. Like all marriages in the past, the females dont have the power to choose who they want to be their wives. Men made the decisions in the world and women were there for support. This reminds me of Romeo and Juliet and all similar stories from that time period and prior. Igraine's sister and daughter were forced to marry men not of their choice.
ReplyDelete3. I believe Arthur does deserve to be king because he was a humble man who followed orders from others unlike Uther and Merlin. By Arthur pulling the sword out of the rock it proves his power and that there is something special about him that is different from everyone else.
2. Some characters have more control over their lives than others. The men seem to decide what events are going to happen, while the women have to just sit back as they happen. Igraine had some control at the beginning when she told her husband that they needed to get away from Uther and they did. Arthur doesnt relly have much control either as he is forced to be king. Merlin and Uther make most of the desicions in the story.
ReplyDelete3. Arthur deserves to be king, as he seems one of the most normal people in the story and he was next in line for the throne. Also, most of the common people supported him, which is the people he will be ruling over. He's also humble and honerable.
2)I also think that the male characters, in general, have more control over their lives than the females. Besides Arthur, all of the men have total control over their lives. However, the women have no control. They have no choice when it comes marriage, or when chosing to keep their child. For example, Lady Igraine had no choice but to be with Uther in the end.
ReplyDelete3) I also think Arthur deserves to be king. He has a good heart and good morals. Also, he comes from a more common background and he would likely make decisions benefitting the common people.
2) Similar to the other comments, I believe the male characters had much more control of their lives than the females. The women cannot make choices on their own including who they marry or if they wish to be married in the first place. I think the men have more freedom and decisions.
ReplyDelete3)I agree that Arthur should be crowned king because he has the support of the people meaning that the people trust and honor him.
