Night: The Assessment Quest

After reading something for school, there is usually an assessment.
What does a student know now?
What is a student able to do now?

Finding an assessment that measures progress is easy if the task is easy--
Do you know the alphabet? Repeat it.
Can you add three numbers together? You add various three number groups until you can do it without error.
If the task is even to remember the plot of a complex novel, you can draw a diagram and we can check that you did not confuse the order or that you did not leave anything out.

Finding an assessment that measures higher order thinking skills, complex thinking can be harder.
Knowing the story of Night is not enough--what will you do with it?
Begin here:
What do you know now that you have read Night?
What are you able to do now that you have read Night?

How can you apply your reading experience to something new?
How does your reading connect to other reading and life experience?
How does reading Night inspire you to want to know more or do more?
What does Night inspire you to create as a measure of your understanding?

  1. Brainstorm below the kinds of assessments that you think would be worthy displays of your reading experience.
  2. Please check pages 600-601 as ideas, especially if you are drawing a blank for an assessment idea.
  3. Many of the assessment ideas on these pages can be modified or combined.
  4. Since this can be such a personal subject, I imagine an individual project, but depending on the proposal, I will entertain options.
  5. Know also, that I expect a proposal and a draft before vacation (Thursday), but that we will work on it after vacation, too. (p.s. I am aware of science fair--I was young once, too!)

  1. 1. I would not mind any assessment, but I would definitely prefer if it were not another essay. We have already done two essays in this course, not to mention i think everyone is kind of done with essays after science fair. I was not a big fan of the group test either, but I would definitely like to do something more on the creative side. One of my favorite assessments I have done was one we did in 7th grade. We had to chose five or ten songs that we think of when we read the novel and we had to write a brief explanation on how that particular song relates to the novel, and why we think of that particular song.

  3. Some ideas for an assessment could be; create a brochure to describe the concentration camps describing
what happened there saying why people would or wouldnt want to go, write a persuasive essay to the president of a random country as their advisor talking about why we should get involved with the war, create a power point using research that you have done about a topic in the book, write about what you would have idealy done to survive. Anything creative would be nice instead of a normal book report. Basically anything out of the ordinary because for the last three weeks we have been writing with the 4nor so papers we had due.

  4. I like Ryan's idea of creating a brochure because we have done a project in spanish in the past that was a brochure and it was creative and not a lot of writing. We could also create a poster and describe what was happening in the story and we could add pictures on what we think concentration camps were like. Also another idea could be to create a survival guide on what the best steps taken could be to survive the Holocaust and avoid death in a concentration camp. Like Ryan, I think a project without a lot of writing would be better becuase in the past weeks we have had Science Fair and other essays due.

  5. I like Nichole's idea of the song thing, like picking 5 songs that represent what we are doing then explaining how each one is relevant. I also like the idea of drawing a picture to represent what we are doing and then maybe on the back explain the picture. I think anything other than writing an essay would be better because I think everyone is burnt out and sick of writing essays right now.

  6. I don't really have any original ideas for this, I see some good ones suggested above, but I do agree that we should stay away from essays.

  7. I have had some experience with other options besides essays--no, really, I have!

We have worked with objects that were symbols, creating a still life or a mobile.

We have worked with creating a soundtrack for a scene or scenes in a movie version.

We have written poetry , from a highly structured biopoem to free verse, allowing characters to speak about what happened to them or others in a new way.

We have written personal essays or letters, encouraging someone to read a novel , memoir or short story.

The idea of a book trailer is something I have never done, but would be interested in.

However, the vehicle isn't as important as what the memoir has made you think about, wonder about, want to tell others that you now understand or that you have a desire to explore.

What you remember isn't as important as how this memoir challenged you to think about the world...and your future in it.

Maybe we could create a mural together that would connect to the memoir, the essay "Tolerance" and the stories we have read.

How do you think the lessons of this memoir apply to Abington and Abington High School...

    Keep thinking.

  8. Like Jeremy, I don't have any ideas for a project that we could do. I honestly wouldn't mind doing an essay, but then again I didn't have science fair so I don't really mind the idea of doing one. I like the idea of doing a diorama of a concentration camp. I think that could be interesting. We could take scenes from the book and make them come to life, I guess you could say.

  9. I would not like to write another essay. Like what Ryan said, I think that we should have to create a brochure. That would be a different take on an assessment and it would be cool to see what people come up with

  10. I think a good assignment would be to gather a series of pictures that mean something to do wiith a theme or emotionn found in the book night, then write a poem about each and bind them together in a book

  11. I agree with Kelly that a diorama of the concentration camp would be a cool project. Something else we could do is make a mural and all make something diffrent and when we put it back together it would show what we learned about tolerance.

  12. I think that a good idea for an assignment would be you assign us all a picture and we have to right a poem about it, and write what we feel when we look at the picture. The picture could either be an actually picture like the ones in the movie we watched or, ones you find online. Also, we could brainstorm a list of words or phrases that represent what we read in "Night' and either draw a picture, make a collage, or right some sort of description...whether it be a poem, or a paragraph im not really sure. I personally would like to something creative and unusual.

  13. I wouldn't mind any type of assessment. If we do an essay I wouldn't want it to be likie the one we did for MSND. I wouldn't mind writing a poem or something like that.

  14. Another assessment we have done is to have everyone from class bring in an object or an image and make a Still Life.

Then, we have played music in the background that is connected to the literature or topic.

And then we write, sometimes about the people or places of the text...
I have given a format, like a bio poem or just let people freestyle.

  15. I really wouldn't like to write another paper, we've been doing a lot of that lately. I think that the idea of a brochure sounds good. I especially liked Kelly's idea of a diorama too.
