In this next unit, we will be looking at the lessons we can learn from history as recorded by authors of short stories, poems, a novel and a memoir in Unit Four of our textbook. If you have time today, access the textbook through the electronic link and preview the texts we will be reading, particularly the work of E.M. Forster, who provides the touchstone text for this unit, "Tolerance"and Elie Weisel who contributes both a selection from his full length memoir,
Night. and his Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech.
The questions I would like to pose before reading are these:
- Of all the lessons we should learn from history, what is the most important?
- What quality is it important for us to develop if we want to preserve civilization and promote peace?
- How do you think reading literature can be part of teaching us to develop this quality?
1) I think that the most important lesson in history cannot be explained as one specific event, but as the general idea that we learn the real story behind the facts. When we learn about certain events in history, we learn what actually happened so we can spread it on for generations to come. It is important that we get the story right the first time, and then continue to spread it correctly.
ReplyDelete2) I think that honestly is an important quality to have if we want to preserve civilization and romote peace. Honestly will help us stay in touch with what was originally done. Also, honestly will promote peace by having the truth be more frequent.
3) I think my reading literature, we will learn about honesty, and see and hear about examples that can help us escalate that quality.
1. I think that the most important lesson that we should learn from history is that it repeats itself. In every major event in history, there have been more than one, a civil war, a depression, any revolution, and a great awakening.
ReplyDelete2. I think an important quality to learn to preserve civilization is to compromise. If we can compromise then no one is mad and will fight.
3. I think reading literature can give us ideas from the past about how to compromise, and we can use those to solve our problems today.
1) I think that there are man things that are important to learn from history, but one in general. We should be taught to learn from our mistakes in history, whether it is a day to day little thing or something huge that a whole nation partakes in.
ReplyDelete2)The quality that is important for us to develop if we want to preserve civilization is good communication. If we are able to communicate instead of wage wars then peace can easily be accomplished. This will promote peace by having there be less war and physical fighting.
3)Reading literature can be part of teaching us to develop this quality because we can learn from past mistakes in communication, and not repeat those same mistakes. Also literature can give us examples of what you should do and how you should communicate to preserve civilization and promote peace.
1. I think the most important lesson we should learn from history is to learn from our mistakes. Because then it helps in the future to make certain decisions.
ReplyDelete2. The most important quality is to just understand where other people come from and why they feel a certain way with certain topics.
3. Reading literature can be part of teaching us to develop the quality of understanding because then we are given examples about how even if one does not feel the same on something with somebody else one can learn to understand and appreciate where the other is coming from.
1) As Alex said above, the major lesson we learn from history is that it can repeat itself. This is because we need to learn from previous mistakes in the hope that we will not fall in the same path as others.
ReplyDelete2)The most important quality is tolerance. Different civilizations do not have to necessarily agree on everything, nor must they accept everything. But if they tolerate it that is when peace is attained.
3)Reading literature educates us, and in some cases shows us the outcome of certain things. Reading literature can let us see through different perspectives and gain a better understanding of other cultures.
1) History can teach us many things about many different areas in life. We can learn about the past times of our nation, we can learn what we did, what we didnt do, and what we could've/should've done back then. We learn how our history shaped us today and helped give us the freedoms we have now as citizens.
ReplyDelete2)A good quality to have is responsibility and reliability. These qualities are good to have because with responsibilities you can carry out your job and parts to help promote peace. Also reliability can help civilization because it creates a strong bond in society and everyone can help everyone else out.
3)Reading literature can help develop these qualities by doing research papers and formal papers to help develop responsibilties and reporting back info and helping out other people out with understanding the reading or comprehension for reliability.
1. I think the most important lesson we can take from history is that it repeats, therefore we ave to pay attention to history so we can help fix our mistakes so they dont happen again.
ReplyDelete2. I think the most important qualitly to perserve civilization and peace is tolerance. If you develop tolerance then everyone is excepted and the world is peacful. Unfortunatley not everyone is tolerant toward each other
3.Reading literature can help us becaue we can see actually storys where it shows what happens when you are not tolerant of others. Literature can show us the right roads.
1. I don't think that there is a specific part of history that is most important. Everything in history is important because history tends to repeat itself.
ReplyDelete2. I agree with Rob that responsibility and reliability are the most important qualities for us to develop if we want 'to preserve civilization and remote peace' becasue everyone has their own responsibilities to do in the world. People have to be able to rely on others as well to get their job done. If both of these qualities are done, then a remote peace will be kept because everyone would be working together.
3. I think that reading literature can be a part of teaching us this quality becuase people write about their own expiriences through history and we can learn from what they say and apply these qualaties to our own life.
1. History teaches us that it repeats itself, and we know that we need to make sure we avoid making the same mistakes.
ReplyDelete2. An important quality to promote peace is the ability to communicate messages well.
3. Reading literature can help us see how other people communicate through dialogue and their actions, and we can see it as history and learn from their mistakes.
1. The most important thing we can learn from history is not to repeat our mistakes. The stories of how our ancestors screwed up should inspire us not to do the same, but to do better and keep making the world a better place.
ReplyDelete2. The most important quality we need to learn is acceptance and tolerance. We need to be tolerant of eachother and our values if we want to get along. Peace can only be achieved if racism and prejudice are destroyed.
3. Literature allows us to see the events of history through someone else's eyes. If we can see history as someone living in that time would have seen it, we can appreciate and understand what they were going through and try to avoid that ourselves.
1) i think that the one most important thing that we should learn from history is how we are going to remember what occured, boviously if something happened 200 years ago not many people will be alive who were actually there so u have to figure out a way to remember it.
ReplyDelete2)the quality we most need to know to preserve civilization and peace would be to learn from the past and not to make the same mistakes.
3)i think that reading from literature can teach us what we need to know about what happened, how they did something, or what we should do to prevent it
1. Like Rob stated, not only should we learn from the things we did in history but the things we didn't do. I believe history repeats itself also and that our nation needs to educate themselves and others.
ReplyDelete2. I think the quality that is most important for us to develop to preserve civilization is understanding.
3. We can learn life lessons and become educated through literature. Writers usually write to provide some education and understandment of a topic.
1. I think that the most important lesson from history is that you cannot do what has already been done. Whatever you do in your life will affect everyone else's lives around you.
ReplyDelete2. I think some important qualities that people should have to preserve civiilization and promote peace are to be understanding and patient. If you do not understand where people are coming from and jsut think your own way, other people will not reespect you and that would cause the opposite of peace. If one is patient they should stay relaxed about situations and be understnading.
3. Reading literature can help develop these qualities because one gets a better understadnnig of other peoples thoughts and how they solved problems.
1. Of the lessons we learn from history, the most important to take from it is not to repeat it. We must understand the mistakes that, others made, or even ourselves, in the past, and make sure to take strides to not repeat them, for the betterment of the world.
ReplyDelete2. It is important for us to develop tolerance in general, of others to prevent fighting.
3. Reading literature is a very good way to learn about history, as it is an intelligently compiled work that can teach us volumes.
1) I think the most important thing we can learn from history is the way that we react with prob=blems isn't always good. I think that if we don't learn from mistakes we've made before because there's been a problem or miscommunication, it will just happen all over again and it won't be good.
ReplyDelete2) I think communication and honesty are the two main things we need to focus on if we want to preserve civilization and promote peace. If we don't know how to talk to each other, problems won't get resolved, and if you lie to each other, then problems will arise.
3) By reading different kinds of literature, we can see how others act when honesty and communication aren't there, and how they react when they are there.
1)Like Nagle, I agree that we need to learn not to repeat the past mistakes of history. Since most situations today have occured in the past we can look back and address current situations by looking at the past experiences of our ancestors.
ReplyDelete2)I think the most important quality people need to learn is to share. It may sound like a childish idea, however if you look at the world you can see that resources today are not equally spread.
3)Literature may teach us qualities like this because it is basically like history, but instead of learning from our ancestors we learn from characters.
1. the most important thing you can learn from history is to not make the same mistakes twice. history teaches us to learn from things that have already happen to you or other people.
ReplyDelete2. A god quality to have is patience. if you can listen to what other people have to say then you will be able to understand things more than if you didn't take their stories into consideration.
3. reading literature can teach us to develop that quality by showing us ways situations would turn out if we didn't have it. it could teach us that it's better t have that quality than not.
1. i think that the thing that we learn from history is that people do silly things out of rash decisons and horrible things like mass murder and war. We need to learn this because if we dont know what not to do, how will we know that its not right and about how wrong it is? thats where i think the quote"those who dont learn history are doomed to repeat it" comes in.
ReplyDelete2.the qualitys we need to develop are love and caring about other people. otherwise people wont car who they hurt and will be all about personal gain and only the best? ones who cheat the most will win.
3. reading liturature teaches us what not to do from passagas about the future like the ones we have read. we have to know how bad the outcomes are of those and to not do them.
1) I agree with Kelly, the most important lesson we learn from history is to learn from our mistakes.
ReplyDelete2) I think the most important quality in a society is acceptance because everyone should be accepted and respected for who they are and what they believe.
3) Reading literature helps because that's how we learn about history and how the stores are passed down.
1. I believe that the most important lesson that can be learned from history is that there will always be a winner and a loser. Whether it be war or politics, someone or something will rise above the other. We have to accept defeat as a loser and try harder the next time.
ReplyDelete2. The quality that is most important is communication because through talking things through any situation can be compromised.
3. Reading literature can teach us how to develop better communication skills by reviewing their success from speeches and strategies, and include those ideas when we communicate
1) I think the most important lesson we should learn from history is to not repeat the mistakes that the world has made in the past. We could have avoided many of the sitations in the world today if we had looked at how similar situations panned out in the past.
ReplyDelete2) I think the best quality to develop if we want to perserve civilization and promote peace is tolerance. Most wars begin because one group is not tolerant of eachother. If everyone just left eachother alone the world as a whole would probably be much better.
3) I think by reading acounts of the horrible things that have happened in the past will help the world see what it is they are doing wrong.
1. One of the main things that we should learn from history is our mistakes. We should be able to learn history and assess what has happened and learn from it. Is there was a mistake that was made, we need to make sure we don't repeat it. If with successful things that happened, we should assess it and you that knowledge to our advantage.
ReplyDelete2. A quality that is important to preserve civilization and promote peace is respect and resposibility. If you respect the people around you and give them all equal chanes and listen to what they have to say, we can learn from everyone. Also, if everyone takes responsibility for their actions, it would help reduce the problems in society.
3. Reading literature can help develop these qualities because we can connect to the characters in the story and relate to them. We can apply the situations they are in to our own lives andd that can help prevent repeating past mistakes.
1. I think the most important lesson we can learn from history are th emistakes we made and how it affected the world today.
ReplyDelete2. A quality that is important to have it equality because I believe everyone should be treated the same and no one should be left out or isolated.
3.Reading literature can help us learn about the world we live in today and how it came to be what it is.
