Theme ID F451

Because you are an experienced reader of Bradbury, you are sure to identify the  themes he tends to write about, especially those about the price we pay for progress--but there are others.

What themes do you see so far in this novel? Please comment below!

Remember, a theme is a  statement, not a one-word topic.
These statements are usually:
  • advice about desirable behavior
  • warnings about undesirable behavior
  • observations about the general nature of behavior

  1. A theme in the novel would be that constant reliance on technology will bring ignorance. Everyone in the book relies on technology so much they become blissfully ignorant.

  2. One theme that I saw is that the price of progress is very high. Especially because of the adaptation to rely on technology.

  3. One of the themes is technology is ruins people. In the novel technology is what people are relying on and it is ruining how people see certain things.

  4. One themes I saw was that too much power and control from the government can lead to a society where little thinking takes place, and there are many false freedoms.

  5. A theme that I see so far in the novel is that people are becoming more dependant on technology everyday that it affects our lives, thoughts, and actions in a majoy way.

  6. Some themes I am seeing is to embrace technology and progress but not to let it take over our lives, also I see the theme to remember how important books are, and not to let our lives rely on technology only; we have to remember how we lived when the technology we have today didn't exist.

  7. One theme I have noticed is that technology can be controlling. We rely on it too much and it is changing the way we live.

  8. I think a theme in this novel is that we are letting technology consume our lives and letting it control our thoughts even, through TV, and this is wrong. We should keep in touch with things like books because we can learn from them.

  9. A theme that I see so far in the novel is about our reliance on technology. This theme can be grouped in the larger category that is the price of progress. Many other noticeable themes in the novel involve the price of progress.

  10. A theme I see in the novel is to form your own opinions, rather than auotomatically jump to conclusions and believe what is being said to you right away. In F451, Faber mentions television tells you what to believe because our mind automatically trusts a newscaster because he seems so right. Faber says books are different. They can be put down at any given time and force us to think.

  12. Another theme would be to take your time while doing things and to just enjoy life. The girl that talks to Montag brings up that there is dew on morning grass and that people may notice more things about life if they just slow down and not rush through everything.

  13. I think a possible theme for the novel is that even though people should take advantage of the technology around them, once they get to the point where it consumes their lives so much that it controls them, they need to take a step back and begin to incorporate the things they once used back into their lives such as books in the case of F451.

  14. For this novel i think that the theme could possibly be that even though technology can be a good thing, it can also be a bad thing that we sometimes will abuse. Thinking that they dont need the books anymore and abusing the technology they have now by burning all of the books in F451.

  15. One theme of this novel is government censorship can be a terrtible thing. When books are taken away so is the freedom of speech and peopel no longer think or speak for themselves. Also, another theme could be that even though technology is a good thing, the way we use it can be harmful to society and ourselves.

  16. I noticed many different themes in this story. One of the themes I found was that technology can be very controlling. It can also ruin peoples lives, but in some ways technology can make people better.

  20. I think that a possible theme for Fahernheit 451 would be the effect of technology on society. This is a common theme for stories in the unit of the Price of Progress. If technology continues to expand and improve, future generations will have no sense of books, libraries, newspapers, things like that.

  21. I agree with sara that the theme in this book is that people are being too relient on technology. People think that they dont need anything old like books and that they can just watch them on a tv without any acctual skill involved.

  22. I Think the theme is Technology can be harmful. Just because books are older and there isn't a person there saying it doesn't mean there not helpful or true.

  23. A theme for this novel could be that technology is too important to people today. Humans use technology each day to get them trough the day instead of maybe doing things on their own.

  24. A theme for this novel is that we rely too much on technology, and at the rate we are going, it will soon consume our lives. Using it sometimes isn't bad, but if we aren't care, we will lose control of our own lives.
