After reading the poems, "the sonnet-ballad" and "Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind,"
please post your initial reactions to the poems below.
Then, consider the verbal irony in each.
How do the poets say one thing, but mean another?
Why do you think these poets would use irony to convey their messages?
I thought they were pretty good. I don't really like poems, but they weren't bad. First the poets feel sorry about what has happened but they also say how in a way war is a good thing. I think the poets would use irony because it makes he audience really think about the topic that is being said.

ReplyDeleteI thought the poems were ok. It was interesting to see how war effects other people, like the people whose loved ones are going off to war. I think they use irony to make the audience really think about it rather than just reading it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else. The poems were interesting because they showed how war effects bystanders, almost as much as the soldiers themselves. I think poets use verbal irony to illustrate a point. It makes the reader think and it conveys a point more effectively than just saying something plainly
ReplyDeleteI pretty much agree with everyone else aswell. The poems were enjoyable and I liked to read about other people's response to war, and what they think of it. I thought it was kind of weird that they thought war was "good" because I think the total opposite, that war is bad.
ReplyDeleteI think these poems were pretty good. They do say things about the positive side of war and how many people are going through this so they are probably are better for the loved one of a soldier. I think the irony takes your mind to a whole other place deeper than the surface meaning.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone else as well. I think that the poems were very interesting and I liked reading about other people's outlooks and responses to war. I also liked how the authors of the poem added imagry and other writing skills to make them more interesting and visual.
ReplyDeleteThe poems we read were pretty good. I enjoyed the poem, "Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind" better than, "the sonnet-ballad." The second poem was more descriptive I thought. I liked how we learned how war effected so many people, even though I already knew it did. I think that the poets used irony to make readers think, and further understand, rather then just reading.
ReplyDeleteI liked the poems. But, I agree with marianna that the second one was better. They both showed how the relationships the people had before with someone were changed because of the war. I think they use verbal irony to make the readers think more about what they're reading and what the writer is really trying to say.
ReplyDeleteI liked these poems i thought they were intresting. I like seeing how war effects other people's lives and feelings. I think they use verbal irony to really get the point across, it helps people understand the story.
