On the Rainy River: Connect to Your Life

In this story, a young man nust decide whether to fight in a war he opposes.

Under what conditions would you be willing to fight in a war?
Under what conditions would you be unwilling to fight?

Currently, our military is 100% volunteer, but in the past, young men were drafted into military service.
At this time, all young men must register for the draft at age 18; one is not eligible for federal financial aid for college without registering.

Women do not have to register at all.
Is that fair? Why or why not?
If there were a draft of all 18-25 year olds, men and women, for military service, how would you respond if you were called to serve?

  1. I dont think it is fair that women dont have to register, but men do. It's sexist that this happens. If i were called to service, I would be horrified. I wouldnt know what to do because I'd be so scared. I don't like fighting and being in the middle of a war would probably not be the funnest thing for me. The only reason I would ever fight in a war is if our country was completely falling apart and there was no hope left. I don't like blood and from movies and stories, I've heard that there is a lot of blood in war.

  3. I think that I would be willing to fight in a war if I was healthy enough and thought I was capable of fighting. I would also be willing to fight if my country really needed me. To fight in war I think that you have to be strong both mentally and physically. If I did not meet those requirements I probably wouldn't fight because I feel that I would let everyone down. I would not fight in war if a member of my family was ill or incapable of taking care of themselves. Also, if I was just starting out with a family life I would not want to fight in war.

I actually think that no one should have to register. If they are willing to fight and serve the country then go for it. But some people may be scared and not fit for the job. If I was caled to serve, I'm not sure if I would fight or not. It would be really tough leaving my home, work, and family.. but if it was a vital war that needed soldiers, I would fight.

  4. I would be willing to fight in a war if our country was being attacked, but I would be unwilling to fight if it was an unnecessary war overseas. I dont't think it is fair to force only men to sign up for the draft. I think you should be able to choose, men and women, whether you sign up for the draft or not, just like how people in the military now chose to sign up. If I were drafted and called to service, I would be willing to fight and do whatever it takes to defend this country.

  5. Its not fair, because every citizen should have to sign up for the draft to recieve equal benefits. However, don't find it to be a big deal that females don't have to sign up for the draft. If all I was selected for the draft I would probably expect it since everybody would hear about it, and would most likeley not be to upset considering Im the one who signed up for the draft, an knew the risk.

  7. I would probably be willing to fight in a war if it was for a cause that I believed in or if my country needed me. Also I would probably look at some stats and see what the death tolls and injuries are, if it was a loosing battle I'd like to know. I would be unwilling to fight if I was forced to do so, if it wasn't my choice, because even with a draft you know what is coming. Also if it was a war that I thought was for a completely wrong reason, or if I didn't believe in the cause. I don't think that it is fair that women didn't have to sign up because they are citizens of our country and should have to protect it as well. If there was a draft for all people of ages 18-25 I would probably be shocked at first but eventually it would become the norm and if I were called I would think that I am just doing my duty for my country.

  8. No I do not think it is fair becasue men and women are created equal and should be required to do the same things. If I were called to serve in the military I would be nervous becasue of the stories I've heard about war. I would be willing to fight in war if our country was falling apart and needed help to get it back to normal. I would be unwilling to fight if I was selected randomly into war without a say.

  9. I dont know if I would ever be willing to fight in a war. War would seem too scary to even think about being involved in. But, if I had no choice because the whole country was involved I would be willing to fight.

I think that is unfair. It shoulod be that everyone has to register or no one at all does. If I had to register and got called to serve I would have to do it. I would be scared but would still be willing unless it was overseas.

  11. If i were to go in the war i would want the conditions to just want them to be whatever it was either an atomic war or more of an political war. I would not want to fight but i wouldnt not want to, if i were to get drafted then i would and wouldnt complain, if i didnt get drafted then i wouldnt not too big of a deal.

I dont think that its fair to both men and women that men are forced to at age 18. Its not fair becasue some women want to be drafted but have to sign up and unlike men as they turn 18 they are automatically put into it. If i would to get drafted then i wouldnt complain that much, what happens happens

  12. I would be willing to fight in any war that in which the U.S. is directly involved. I would not fight in a war that the U.S. is an ally in. I do not think its fair that women to not have to sign up for the draft because if they are allowed to voluenteer for the draft, they should have to sign up for the drft as well. If i was called into military service from a draft, i would go and serve my time.

  13. The only way i would be willing to fight in a war is if i had no personal ties. That meaning i had no girlfriend/fiance/wife, had no children, my parents agreed and my friends would be supportive. If any of these are out of wack i will not be willing to fight. I do not think it is fair that women dont have to register becasue they complain about not being treated equal and then they arent and they are okay with it, if they want to be treated equal so bad they should have to enlist. If i was called into service i would warn everyone i know about the risks and say bye to all of my family and friends and pack up my things.

  14. I would be willing to fight in a war for the benefit of my country. Also if losing the war would result in unsafety within the homeland. If a foreign country captured me and forced me to fight in war I would be unwilling to do so. I dont think that it is fair that women dont have to register for war because it makes it seem like women are given certain privlidges that men are not. If all 18-25 year olds were drafted into war, there would definitely be anger towards the government but I would serve my country with honor.

  15. I would fight in war if my country was in desperate need of people to fight or if we were on the verge of losing a war. I would be unwilling to fight any other time because war scares me so bad. I don't think its fair that women don't have to register, although i like that idea it is unfair to men. If I was called to serve I would probably freak out and dread going. I would also be really sad.

  16. I don't think it's fair because I believe no one should be required to fight, regardless of gender. If there was a draft I think I would not participate, unless we were being invaded by another country and everyone's lives were at risk, but even then I might not. I would be scared and I don't think I would ever be able to take away other's lives.

  17. Like Brian said,I would be willing to go to war if my country neeeded to be defended. I don't believe in invading other countries because that just causes more problems and a longer war. I also believe that men and woman should both have to go to war not just men. There is nothing wrong with a woman to not serve and go through training to be prepared just like men.

  18. The only condition that I would fight in a war is if i agreed with it and felt strongly for what we are fighting for. I would be unwilling if it was something unreasonable and if I didn't agree with it.

I don't think its fair because women should be able to do anything that men do.

I would be petrified if I was called to serve. I know that I would have to go, but I personally wouldnt want to.

  19. I would be willing to fight if i was healthy and I was needed. If I were to be drafted, I would be scared, but I would know that I would have to go because I was chosen. I don't think it's fair that only me have to register. It is a disadvantage to men that women are given a choice that they are not. Being drafted would be frightening, because you wouldn't know what to expect.

  20. I don't think it's fair that anyone should have to enlist even if they don't want to. I agree with Max, though, it's not really a big deal that women weren't required to sign up because they're generally the ones taking care of their children and things like that. They at least shouldn't have required any single parents to sign up so that children weren't left without a mother or a father. I wouldn't participate in a war because I don't believe that it's the way to solve problems and it'd be scary and dangerous.

  21. I personally believe it is unfair to force the men to register to enter war while the women have a choice. If I were chosen for war I would be terrified and would definitely not want to fight. In extreme cases of fighting for our own lives then I would most likely fight for myself. I believe war is pointless and is certainly not the right way to solve problems.

  22. I would only be willing to join the Military if I didn't have to fight directly especially if it was a war I did not believe in.
I don't think its unfair to men because nothing is ever going to be fair and whenever women complain about something being unfair towards them I would tell them to deal with it so I would say the same thing to men who complain about the draft.

  23. I don't think it's fair that women don't have to register. I wouldn't want to fight directly in the war. I think men should have a choice as well. If I didn't truly believe in what we were fighting for or it was very far away and/or unnecessary to be fighting in the first place.

  24. I would be willing to fight in a war if i had no family and didnt get good enough grades to go to college or couldnt pay for college. i would be unwilling to fight if i had a husband/ kids or a good job or was at college having fun. I think that woemnt not having to register is fair becasue they have to stay home and take care of their kids and its more dangerous for them to be out in the battle feild and be pregnate. That just takes more care and more efforts so it is smart that they dont have to. Its saving thearmy money. I would be very mad and probably wouldnt go to serve. i would get sick purposely or something to get out of it.

  25. If I were asked to go to war, I would have to determine if I believed in the war. If my country was the one being attacked and I was needed to help defend it I would join the fight, but i would have to think about joining a war if my country was invading another. I think everybody should have to enlist in the draft because if you live in a country with freedom you need to be willing to fight to keep those freedoms.
