War Poems: Connect to Life, page 578

Do you know anyone who has been involved in a war, either as a participant or a bystander?
In your comments, discuss the effects of war as you have heard them described or as you imagine them.

  1. My grandfather was in the Navy during World War 2. He was on a battleship off the coast of Iwo Jima. He never saw any action but from the stories i have heard, war is not something to be proud of. My barber also served in Vietnam, he said he was close to combat and made sure to stay out of it and go back to the base to avoid the horrors it brings.

  3. Two of my great uncles served in Vietnam. Neither of them like to talk that much and they do on very rare occasions, which shows just how bad it truly was. When they do talk about it they usually talk about how horrific it was to fight and how their live have changed sine returning home.

  5. My uncle was in the Navy and served on a gunship but I don't think he was actually in battle. If he was, he never talks about it.

  6. My grandmother lived in Poland at the time of the German occupation duting World War II. She was a Catholic, so she was not sent to camps like the Jewish, but life was still very bad. She will never talk about it, so I know very little about it.

  7. Both my grandfathers were in vietnam and served in the air force. I never talked to them about it but from what i see and hear about people who have lost loved ones in war say its such a tradgedy. You never know when your going to get a call saying they were killed or injured and if they have kids back at home growing up without them, that has such a big effect on the rest of their life that they spend without their parent and they will never get that back no matter how good a thing the parent did for the greater good.

  11. My granfather Richard Anderson was in Vietnam and survived with a knife wound across his back. He hates talking about the war and refuses to speak about his experiences as a soldier. He almost seems tramatized by it and is sort of deafened because of the war. I also have my father Robert McClafferty who was in the marines and just missed the Persian Gulf war by 1 month, and he said he liked being a marine and wishes he went into war. Then finally my final link to war is my Great Pepe who was a cheif in military for 26 years before he passed away.

  12. I didn't have any relatives, that I know of, who have been involved in war. I know people who have grandparents, parents or even siblings who were involved. War effects so many people in some way or another.

  13. I dont know anyone that is or was involved in war. My grandfather does tell a lot of storys about when war was going on when he was a child. I can't imagine having someone close to me go off to war, I would be sad and scared for them.

My gradnmother now has my great grandfathers purple heart, and when he was alive he never liked to talk about the war, which as a kid I couldn't understand. 18. My grandfather & great uncle both were both world war 2 veterans. It traumatized them both and they never wanted to speak of it. The only time my grandfather told me about it was before he died. They were both proud to served for their country, though.
