MSND: Who is your character? What do you think?

So, we have read through the first few scenes of MSND, just to get an idea of what our characters are like and what the plot's about. This is what a cast would do on the first rehearsal.

Usually, the director has a concept that gives a particular perspective on the play by setting it traditionally, or in another "universe" other than the author intended it. Shakespeare's plays were often done in dress contemporary to the times.

How should we "DO" this play?

Also, each actor develops a "backstory", in great detail, so he or she knows where his or her character is coming from and what that a character wants more than anything in the world of the play. Actors keep developing this backstory in order to provide motivation for speaking, moving, and choosing as the character in the play.

Who IS your character?
WHAT does he or she WANT?

Please answer those questions below (use internet references to help you out, including images from other versions and performances of the play).

(If you do not have a speaking role in the play, list a few interesting words, allusions, facts about Shakespeare...or send me a picture from today that I can put up on the next post!)

  1. The first thing that came into my mind when I found out I was Titana is that it reminds me of Mrs. Mayor of Whoville in Seusical. I think that my charcter is trying to lead her followers of the supernatural world, but Oberon won't let. I think that we should base this play in the modern world, maybe in the city. And have my character be "queen" or kind of in charge of a company or new earthlings. I'm up for anything though.

  2. My character is Peter Quince. He is basically the leader of the worker people in the play. He is also the author and director of the play in the play. His job is as a carpenter in ancient Athens. I think it would make sense for our play to be based either sometime in the 1900's or now, because that would be the most normal to act out.

  4. My character is Moth which makes me think of...a moth. This character is a fairy and is a minor part of the play with very little speaking parts. I also agree that we should base the play in the modern world.

  5. Some words to know-
    Beseech- to beg eagerly for
Adieu- the act of leaving or departing

  6. My character is Oberon, the king of the faries. He reminds me of Amun Ra, the Egyptian sun god. Oberon is the leader of the faries and it seems like he has an impact on the lives of the Athenians, just like Amun Ra. This play could be set in the modern world, but i dont like the idea of it being in the city. I think it should be in a rural area. It could also be set in colonial America, when towns were never far from the forest.

  7. My character is Nick Bottom. He is a weaver who ends up getting his head turned into that of a donkey. He wants to play all of the parts in the play overseen by Peter Quince. I don't really have a preference on the place, but I think we should do it near present day.

  8. My character is Robin Goodfellow, also known as Puck. He is a hobgoblin in service of Oberon. He starts all the trouble that happens in the play and is very mischievous and plays a lot of pranks. I also think it would be a good idea to perform the play in the present day.

  9. My character is Francis Flute, who, despite his protests, is forced to play a girl in the play the Mechanicals put on. So, to fit the part, he decides to speak his lines in a high-pitched, girly voice. I think it would be cool to set the play in modern times, as it would feel more comfortable, but I think it would work out fine in any time period.

  10. My character is Tom Snout, he is a Tinker and plays a wall in the play. So for my character the time period doesn't really matter as long as there is a wall. However I did like Alex's idea of colonial America because it provides a lot of variation in location, such as towns and forests. It could even be something like Colonists and Native Americans.

My character is Hippolyta, the Amazonian queen who is to soon marry Demtrius. I like the idea of setting the play in modern times. I also think we should do this play while standing and pushing the tables out of the way, like we did last year for Romeo and Juliet as well as Oedipus Rex.

  13. my character is the fairy named Cobweb. the first thing i thought of was spiders. i only have a few very short lines in act II. i agree that we should base this play around the modern world.

  14. My character is Mustardseed, a fairy. I like Alex's idea of setting the play in Colonial America because if it was set in a present-day city, there wouldn't really be a forest close by like there is in the play. But it'd also be interesting, like Marianna said, if it was set in the present and the queen was head of a business or something because it's more relevent to our world today.

  15. My character is Peaseblossom, a fairy. I think that the setting of the play should be in Colonial America as well because it is different and more modern. It would be easier for people to understand because it is what we are used too and like Erica said more relevant to our world and life today. Also, the setting could take place in a variety of places if the setting was set around Colonial America.

  16. I am Hermia who is in love with Lysander but my father wants me to marry Demitrius. Therefore i have three choices, marry him, die, or become a nun. This would be cool to act on in a familiar place.I agree that we should do it in a modern time maybe in Boston or somewhere close so we can all relate.
