While we are in agreement about the thesis of this essay from the Care of the Soul by Thomas Moore,
"It is clear that love is never simple, that it brings with it struggles of the past and hopes for the future, and that it is loaded with material that may be remotely--if at all--connected to the person who is the apparent object of love,"
we may be in disagreement when we evaluate the most effective example that proves his point.
In the comments below, identify the most effective example in the essay and explain how it works to convince you of the author's thesis about love.
The comment I found that I think best supports the thesis we found is in paragraph 6 on page 195. It says "The early Romantic German poet Novalis put it quite simply: love, he says, was not made for this world." I think that it best supports the thesis because it explains why nobody can explain love. It also explains all the difficulties that come along with love, such as the struggles of the past and hopes for the future. As well as material that may not at all be related to the "object" of love.
ReplyDeleteThe sentence I found that the sentence that best supports the thesis is the second sentence of the second paragraph: "We always expect love to be healing and whole, and then are astonished to find out it can create hollow gaps and empty failures." That sentence shows all three parts of thesis statement.
ReplyDeleteThe sentence that best supports the thesis is the first sentence in paragraph three: "Our love of love and our high expectations that it will somehow make life complete seems to be an integral part of the experience." Many people think love is going to fix our problems and make everything perfect. This sentence includes all three parts of the thesis.
ReplyDeleteI think that the sentemce that best supports the thesis is in paragraph two and the second to last sentence: "In his Symposium, his great book on the nature of love, Plato caled lve the child of fullness and emptiness." It explains that love can be both and therefore not easy, and that love can involve both struggles and hopes for the future.
ReplyDeleteI think the sentence that best supports the thesis is from paragraph six, sentence seven, saying: "Love confuses its victims because its work in the soul does not always coincide in every detail with the apparent tempos and requirements of relationship." This talks about the complexities and confusions of love, which is emphasized in the thesis.
ReplyDeleteI also picked the quote, "We always expect love to be healing and whole, and then are astonished to find that it can create hollow gaps and empty failures," as the quote that most accuratly describes the thesis and proves the point trying to be made. This quote expresses all parts of thesis and explains that we should not expect so much of love, and that love has its struggles and even times of failure.

This quote expresses all parts of thesis and explains that we should not expect so much of love, and that love has its struggles and even times of failure.
ReplyDeleteThe example I chose to support the thesis is on page 194, pretty much the whole second paragraph, but specifically, "Our love of love and our high expectations that it will somehow make life complete seem to be an integral part of the experience. Love seems to promise life's gaping wounds will close up and heal." It shows that love is too complicated for us to comprehend, and we expect too much of it, as expressed in the thesis.
ReplyDeleteI also thought that the line "We always expect love to be healing and whole, and then are astonished to find out it can create hollow gaps and empty failures (Moore 193).", was the most powerful statement in the essay. It stood out the most to me and I thought that much of the essay pertains to that sentence. The whole work revolves around the idea that love has high expectations and often low outcomes.
ReplyDeleteI felt that the sentence on page 193 "We always expect love to be healing and whole, and then are astonished to find out it can create hollow gaps and empty failures" was the most effective in proving the point of the thesis. It covers how people see hope in love but also face struggle with it. It is also a prime example of why love isn't simple, showing that people expect one thing from love but get another instead.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the best quote to back up the thesis was on page 194 in the second paragraph. That whole paragraph pretty much sums up the thesis, but if I had to choose one sentence that would best do this it would have to be, "Our love of love and our high expectations that it will somehow make life complete seem to be an integral part of the experience."
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Alex that the sentence "The early romantic German poet Novalis put it quite simply: love, he says, was not made for this world." This supports the thesis because it says that love simply is too powerful and confusing to really exist in our world. If humans were perfect creatures they would be capable of loving, but they are not so love is incapable of existing perfectly in the world so it always lets us down.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Abby because people do expect love to be perfect but there's always problems and they just end up disappointed when it doesn't work out according to our high expectations.
ReplyDeletei agree with abby that its the sentence, "Our love of love and our high expectations that it will somehow make life complete seems to be an integral part of the experience." this sentence says how we expect so much from love when we go into it. we think it will fix everything.
ReplyDeleteI believe the sentence that best shows the thesis is also from paragraph six the seventh sentence saying: "Love confuses its victims because its work in the soul does not always coincide in every detail with the apparent tempos and requirements of relationship." This talks about the problems and difficulties of love, which is strongly shown in the thesis.
ReplyDeleteI think the first sentence of paragraph two is the most effective sentence that supports the thesis and it introduces the next sentence in that paragraph very well. "WE sometimes talk about love lightly, not acknowledging how powerful and lasting it can be" is the sentence i chose as the most effective. i did so because i think it shows parts of the thesis statement well and gives exampless already as a topic sentence.
ReplyDeleteI think the paragraph that best supports the thesis is on page 193 and continues on to 194. In this paragraph it talks about how love can leave gaps and not expressing it can cause pain and regret. Also, how it can lead to anger to the person you loved, when the only one you're angry with is yourself.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Abby, the first sentence in paragraph three "Our love of love and our high expectations that it will somehow make life complete seems to be an integral part of the experience". I think this is a good example because it talks about how love is supose to make you feel complete and it is supose to make you feel better.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brian and Alex that the statement " The early romantic German poet Novalis put it quite simply: love, he says, was not made for this world" supports the thesis well. Humans can not really keep up with love and its obsticles it brings.

ReplyDeleteI think that the secntence Brian agrees with; "Love, he says, was not made for this world." Becasue ots simply, to the point. It supports the thesis of this whole essay that people cant handel love truly and that it just confused us mortals. Although we may think we are "in love" we really might not acctualy know what love feels like.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Marianna that that is the best quote. It explains what people expect of love and it also explains what love really is. It's not always fun and games, it can be painful and though. This quote supports the thesis because it says that love is definately not simple and it can really hurt.
ReplyDeleteI chose the quote, "We always expect love to be healing and whole, and then are astonished to find that it can create hollow gaps and empty failures." I picked this quote because it really supports the thesis shows that sometimes as humans we expect love to always make everything better but in reality, love is not always healing and whole it can also break you down and make you feel empty and hurt on the inside.
