Do Now: Response to the Elie Wiesel Auschwitz Death Camp Interview

One way to prepare for a discussion is to take a few minutes to gather your thoughts.
For today's "Do Now" think the Oprah interview of Elie Wiesel at the Auschwitz Death Camp (2006).

In your comments, answer at least 2 of the following 4 questions:
  1. Describe what went through your mind as you watched the interview.
  2. What images or words stay with you afterwards?
  3. Do you have any questions you would like to ask Elie Wiesel or another survivor? List them.
  4. How does seeing the interview change how you will read Night?

Now, when we talk together, you will have something to refer to.
If you don't know what to say, you can read what other people think and build on their observations.
If you have something else you to write  that isn't covered by the questions, feel free to add it.
If you can't think of anything during class , you can do your "Do Now" later tonight.

  3. 1. When I was watching the movie things that went through my mind was how can one person be so controlling and kill that many people without even taking a second guess about what he was doing. He also controlled all of those people that he made believe that it was okay to kill of the Jewish people.
    2. The images that stuck with me are the ones that showed all the people that were killed.
    3. One question I have for Elie Wiesel is how did you not go crazy in the camps and how did you survive knowing your mother and sister were killed immediatley?
    4. Seeing the intreveiw will change the way I read the book by taking more seriousness in reading the book.

  6. 1.) what i saw in the movie was very intersting. And i also felt sad because i thought of all the little kids and how they had to suffer for somthing they didnt even do.
2.) The image and words that stay with me after seeing the video was that there was the 7 tons of hair, all of the little kids shoes and all the suit cases. Also what will stay with me is the actions of Elie Wiessl while he was walking though, where he was split up with his mother and his sisters.

  7. 1) While I was watching the interview the thoughts that went through my mind were horrific and scared . All those people that were gassed and killed was terrible .
    2) The images that stayed in my head were the suitcases and childrens shoes . The people who left their suitcases actually thought they were going to get to leave , and the childrens shoes were so sad to see knowing that they all died .
    3) The question that I would have for Elie Wiesel or another survivor is to know how they haven't gone mad or crazy seeing their family members getting taken away and killed .
    4) The interview changes how I will read the book Night by giving me a different point of view on how they actually did everything and how I know where everything is and how the weather conditions were . Also ,how they had to wear the same striped shirt and pants all year round .
